There's as much that it would do so in Windows 10 as in Windows 7 and 8. That's the way I see it. I've never had an upgrade break anything _ever_ so I'm not afraid that it would happen this time around. Ditto that! The only conflict I've ever seen is with 3rd-party software and certain addons/modifications which have problems pursuant to an update or upgrade... And then they're pretty easily remedied. This time around with the updates, certain versions of Outlook took a hit : http://tinyurl.com/omtthq6 Turns out it was on older Windows versions (which are qualified for upgrade to Windows 10). What is MCT tool? Googled it and got some odd results.
Kenny Cargill "Rene Lamontagne" wrote in message ... I have not received anything from MS so decided to update manually using the MCT tool, The whole process was remarkably fast, 51 minutes for download and install. No surprises and everything seems OK so far. Regards, Rene |

When you run it, you can choose to "Upgrade this PC now" or you can "Create installation media for another PC". Both ways, you can use it to update Windows 10 to build 10586 (actually a new installation over the old one, keeping user data and programs). |

Thanks, had previously downloaded Win 10 ISO but this is a newer version.
Hadn't installed it yet because I'm planning on buying an SSD. Kenny "Paul" wrote in message ... Kenny wrote: What is MCT tool? Googled it and got some odd results. Is this a generic, like a retail, version of Win 10 or has it been tailored
to this laptop? Also it's an Acer laptop, what happens to the present Win 8.1 Acer Recovery partition, do I delete/format it? Kenny "Kenny" wrote in message ... Also it's an Acer laptop, what happens to the present Win 8.1 Acer Recovery partition, do I delete/format it? Kenny If the tool makes an ISO9660 file, as far as I know it should be the same ISO as everyone else in your country. If the tool carries out an installation directly, there is always the possibility (at some point), it will fetch drivers for your specific computer model. AFAIK, the Recovery partition stays as is. An OEM partition should be untouched (that 12GB partition from the factory). Even other flavors of Recovery, such a Refresh/Reset, may not be configured correctly by default. Some of the methods described here, actually require the user to do some setup work in advance. Otherwise, there may be a less-than-desirable outcome. For my planning purposes, I just assume these are all broken, and thus, come up with a Plan B of my own. When refresh/reset first came out, it actually worked. And it has gone downhill from there. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...dows-10-a.html My general assumption is, if I need to push any button similar to any of those, I will be taken back to "cave-man days" :-) With some reading, pre-planning, and execution, maybe good things happen. I have enough OS installations here, I could never keep up with this topic on any of them. Paul |

What's more likely is that MSFT efforts to fine tune the W7/8x upgrade GWX app and WU route will create more issues with 7/8x. Win10 auto-updating is probably a lower risk of breaking something due to the volume of feedback and telemetry from over 10 million Windows Insiders auto-updating Win10. Win7 is past the mainstream support, 8.0 ends in January, and 8.1 diminishing in lieu of 10. Bottom line - MSFT efforts on reliability and robustness of its supported o/s are directed at Win10. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

The Win10 installation will provide or fetch updated drivers if necessary. In some cases, newer drivers may be available but may or may not be offered later if the current drivers are sufficiently compatible. As an example - laptops using a Synaptics Touch pad could receive an updated driver during the 1511/10586 installation and setup process and another offered later in 10586. Whether or not updates during install and later are offered also depends on the existing driver being used in 7 or 8x or 10240. AFAIK, the Recovery partition stays as is. An OEM partition should be untouched (that 12GB partition from the factory). Even other flavors of Recovery, such a Refresh/Reset, may not be configured correctly by default. There are still a marginal occurrences of Recovery Partition intact but not usable where OEM user created or provided DVD's are necessary, thus anyone considering updating should have one or the other or both available...better yet as many have recommended create the image of the prior qualifying o/s before upgrading to 10 from 7x/8x (likewise an image of 10 (10240) should be done before moving from 10240 to 10586. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

A few suggestions you might like to explore that I used to rectify some concerns (similar to yours) that I also didn't like. 1. Change the Color of Taskbar and Window Border in Windows 10 http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/...indows-10.html 2. Windows 10 Color Control http://rammichael.com/getting-bright...-in-windows-10 3. GiMeSpace Win8.x Color Changer (also works with Win10-10586) www.gimespace.com/win8color.html 4. Personalise Panel for Windows10 http://winaero.com 5. Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4.0 http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultima...r-4-windows-10 The layout of my desktop looks like my OS is Windows7; behind the mask it is Windows10 10586. If you don't mind a 3MB file you can see how the Taskbar and windows borders relate to my chosen color of orange. You will note that the title bar and border colors are consistent on the active panel and the border colors are reduced in color for the inactive windows. The file at Mediafire can be previewed at: http://www.mediafire.com/view/7s3ei9...015-11-17_.png But the worst is Mozilla Thunderbird, My line spacing has increased to about one and one half to two times normal, in all 3 panes and the top bar where the minimize-MIN/MAX and shut down X is only showing about half height. I have deleted the program and all profiles and reloaded 2 or 3 times to no avail, It is ugly and I have lost half of my space, NOT good. I also don,t much care for the black menus in a few spots. I may need a new newsreader if Tbird is not repaired, Any Ideas? I have tried a few free ones but still like Tbird best. I don't believe that you are looking at a Thunderbird problem. I also run Tbird (38.2.0) and have had no problems at all. My version has a number of add-ons supplied as part of Softmaker Office 2016. Prior to installing Office 2016, Thunderbird was stock standard. Good luck, Where did you get the wallpaper. To heck with the color control, where's the paper? LOL The wallpaper is from a theme put together by photographer Hayley Elizabeth which is called Manitoba theme. The set of pictures can be downloaded from: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/w...download-theme Although I liked all the pictures, the one I chose for my desktop was chosen partly because the icons on my desktop are very easy to find! Seriously, the difference in color between an active and inactive window does not look that much. The differences are variable, depending on the software developer and what rules they choose to follow. While the Title bar may not change density whether active or inactive. the other three edges mostly do, and the name in the title bar is also not as dark when inactive. The programs which have a Mozilla based origin appear to follow their own standards, including different border sizes. Such variations are not a show-stopper for me - I just wanted to set the border colors to a color of my choice and also I didn't like the VERY skinny borders that Windows 10 gave us. I have uploaded a small picture which should indicate to you why I mentioned a difference in the border color between active and inactive windows. You can view it at: http://www.mediafire.com/view/7klqqd...015-11-18_.png Cheers, |
