Annoying Keyboard shortcuts in Vista's Windows Explorer
One thing I don't like about Vista is the keyboard access in Windows
Explorer. In XP, you could press TAB repeatedly to cycle through all the different focus areas: Folder, files, disappears, address bar. Having 3 or 4 areas means you're never far from where you want to be. Press tab once or twice and you're good. In Vista, you have to press TAB 7 or more times! This is because it cycles through all the other areas, like column headings (to sort), etc. Now I understand that they are making it "accessible", in cycling the focus to the column header, etc. But it inconveniences me many times a day! What solution am I hoping for? Ideally, some key other than tab would just cycle between folders, files and address bar (the commonly used areas). Or there would be some option to disable the focus going elsewhere. Another annoying thing with Explorer is that whenever I alt-tab away from the explorer window and then go back, the focus moves from the files area to one of the column headings. So I have to press shift- tab twice to get back to the files (or tab 5 or more times). And sometimes the focus looks like its on the folders, but pressing tab doesn't get you to the files area; you have to press tab about 4 times! Is this a bug? It's so annoying because I use this all the time. Is there some logic to all this, or is it just a bug? The other keyboard annoyance is using F2 to rename. It's actually a really nice feature that it highlights only the main part of the filename, and not the extension, since you usually don't want to rename the extension. But I use F2 very often to take a copy of the filename into the clipboard so that I can paste it into a notes document. I do this very often after I save a web page, as I like to note the url and my chosen filename. So I have to press F2 and then shift-end (to capture the extension too). I'm not just ranting here. I'm hoping that someone will reveal some hidden new Vista keyboard shortcut that I don't know about that will solve my problems. |
