Your old desktop uses wifi?
How did you do that?

Added a wi-fi card to daughters desktop in town so she didn't have to
run any wires in apartment she shares with another. Was no problem, once
driver installed it became same as a laptop, enable the connection you
want and disable the other.

Ok. Then all that is needed is to get the old wifi code from
the router and enter it into the computer's wifi settings.
No more than 5 minutes.

Or at worst, if Pfsszxt's router won't make it visible, he can reset it
in the router's internal setup and create a new WiFi password there -
and write it down!

Actually, I write down my WPA password *before* I enter it into the
router, and check about three times before finalizing...Overkill, but
what the heck.

Someone is having you all on
The desktop is no longer at his house, but at his daughters?
Wasn't it briefly his wife's?
He's not only lost the wireless password, but the desktop itself.
Maybe he is at the wrong house

Well, the D-Link thing is gone. I have the router key.
My laptop connects fine. The old,old desk top has connected
for a long time but suddenly stopped for an unknown reason.
I ask widows to do it's diagnosis. After a while, I got the response
that the router "needed to be reset". But, my laptop is receiving well.
So I'm still at a loss.
I'm not aware of any helpful responses I've ignored, but it isn't
unusual to conflicting responses.

Now, now, Mr Hideous, please don't rain on our collective parades -
we're having just as much fun with this as you are :-)

Mind you I live very rural so I run an unprotected network. Anyone
tapping into my signal is sitting in my driveway so I feel safe leaving
it that way for convenience, e.g. kids show up with gameboys etc.

Just curious, but what have you done to limit the range to include only your
driveway? I'm curious because I used to routinely connect to WiFi networks
that were between 1/4 mile and 2-3 miles away, although the longer distances
were places located across a wide valley from me.

With specialized equipment, I think the record is/was somewhere around 240
miles, but that required such equipment to be at both ends.
