Default !!DRIVERS ARE NO GOOD!!

I have a IBM Thinkpad T42 that I have just wiped clean and installed XP PRO.
I'v downloaded the appropriate drivers from IBM's website and none work. Iv
scoured the web and have found many hard to find drivers for many systems in
the past but this is the first time that I have gone to the manufacturer's
website to download the specific drivers for a system just for them NOT to
work. I am ToTaLLy confoosed on this one here. Could anybody out there kick
me in the right direction and enlighten me on what I may be missing that im
JUST NOT SEEING??
