Chrome and Malware
Running WinXP Pro SP3 with all updates.
Running SuperAntiSpyware free addition for malware finds. I run SuperAntiSpyware two times before I do the following: If I go to any site using IE8 and then run SAS I get 0-10 tracking cookies. If I go to any site using Google Chrome and then run SAS I get upwards of 400 tracking cookies. This is very consistent. Does anyone know how to stop Chrome from allowing so many tracking cookies? Thanks Henry |

Chrome and Malware
I stopped using Google Chrome and uninstalled it from my XP machine when I noticed extra bloatware
being added to my msconfig for boot loading. On Sun, 10 Feb 2013 14:00:31 -0600, Henry wrote: Running WinXP Pro SP3 with all updates. Running SuperAntiSpyware free addition for malware finds. As usual, what it says on the site and what I actually have is different. I have the following in my version of Chrome: Allow local data to be set (recommended) Keep local data only until I quit my browser Block sites from setting any data Block third-party cookies and site data The site you sent me to has: Delete cookies Block cookies by default Allow cookies by default Keep cookies and site data by default until you quit your browser Make exceptions for cookies from specific websites or domains I chose Block third-party cookies and site data. I then went to a site with Chrome and then ran SuperAntiSpyware and it only found 5 tracking cookies so that must be OK. I don't know what will happen when I go to a site that requires this. Henry |

If you select this choice - Keep cookies and site data by default until you quit your browser - you will never have to wonder. While you browse, you'll get tons of cookies; when you close the browser, all will be deleted. An extreme solution, and as many sites use cookies to store your personal configurations of that site, you would have to redo the configuration each and every time you visited it. To the OP: As far as blocking "tracking' cookies, I would first try in Chrome's Settings-Show Advance Settings-Privacy: "Do Not Track." There are also "Do Not Track" plugins. But none of this actually blocks tracking. It only requests the server not to. Strictly voluntary on the servers part. Also, there are other "privacy" settings there. Under Privacy-Content Settings-Cookies-Manage Exceptions, you can "block" or "allow" or "clear on exit" specific sites from setting any and all cookies. Lots of other privacy options there, too. Is there anyway to keep those 26 and throw away all the new ones? Yes. The setting is found - oddly enough - in Opera, Tools, Preferences, Advanced, Cookies. The actual language for the setting I mentioned is, "Delete *new* cookies when exiting Opera". That means you can load up on whatever cookies you want *before* setting the above option and any new cookies in the future will be deleted when you close the browser. You can retain all cookies from a site or sites, domain or domains too. For example, suppose you have it set to delete new cookies and you visit www.new-stock-broker.com, like it and want to keep its cookies; you do so by right clicking the page and selecting "Edit Site Preferences" from the pop up menu. That opens a window with several tabs; select the cookie tab and *uncheck* "Delete new cookies when exiting Opera". Unticking it affects only the site you have in your browser, nothing else.
