Do you have a "restore point" from when your machine worked? If so, what
happened when you did a restore?

I'm amazed that it took this long. I figured it would be hours, a
couple of days at most.

According to Andy...

quote
It's easier to use a disk imaging program and store the images on another
drive.

If you have downloaded files since your last image backup, copy them to
another drive before you create the new image.

System restore is unreliable.
/quote

So he doesn't think System Restore is relaible but he does have an image so
he should NOT have a problem. ;-)

Unless there's some earlier thread, appertaining to this, that I've
overlooked, your request for assistance is seriously lacking in detail :

As [even] a general query, a post needs to "spell out" three things ; a).
what you remember doing that took you from a time when everything 'worked'
okay, b). what you perceived actually happened (including any error
messages observed) and c). any steps you have taken / things you have tried
in attempting to solve the problem...

After posting a general outline that includes those fats, you may also then
go on to include detail concerning make / model / pc configuration / etc.,
afterwards...

Here are some more details.

Erunt did not restore from an older config, sfc /scannow did not do
anything.

I have my sp2 install disk.

I don't have a disk image either.

I have been trying to re-install Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2.

I ran sp2 for about 2 years with only one minor hardware issue with my
internal modem.

Since getting sp3 and the security fixes, my system is getting many
hardware problems as well as software problems.

Windows won't let me uninstall sp3.
I do not remember what message if any that it gave when it failed.

Based on past experience in reinstalling Windows XP sucessfully, I
did the following:

I deleted some key files in the root directory and tried to reinstall
sp2 using my XP sp2 install disk.

It says I need an earlier version installer cd (like Win 98).

I threw my Win98 install disk away last year thinking I would never
need it.

I returned all those files back where they came from using my install
disk.

I then tried to reinstall all the up to date drivers for all of my
hardware.

It got 3/4 thru and then it said the installer failed. (Windows
installer)

Here are some more details.

After logging in, box comes up and says

Application Error

Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 0013FE7D
RPC service is unavailable.

When I start Event Viewer, I can see the log of events but I cannot
open any of them to see what the error or warning is.

How extremely helpful. (Good luck Andy - I suspect it is sortable.)

Agreed. Considering the list of things he's already done, each messing
things up more than the last, a clean install after format is indicated.
He's mucked the system up repeatedly with the steps taken.

Any chance you are using Kaspersky?
