MRU and windows history lists?
Where else are the most recently opened documents stored, besides in the
registry or the \recent folder? In cleaning it, I have one entry I can't delete, and am wondering where else it can be hiding? |

What is the entry? -- Glen Ventura MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 CompTIA A+ It was just a text file, and I would like to know where a log of these recent document history entries is being stored, besides the usual, well known places. It seems the "windows history list" entries (or at least some of them) may be stored in several different places, however (and not just in the registry, or in IE history, or in the \recent folders on the hard drive). I would like to know where else, however, as trying to remove one of them by the standard methods failed (it just reappears after it's checked off for being cleared, in one of my system utility programs). (I also have that registry option [ClearRecentDocsOnExit, dword=1] to delete recent document history automatically on logoff, since I find it annoying to have that list). |

In cleaning it, I have one entry By "it", I presume you mean the "documents" list in the Start menu (at least, that's what it's called in the old-style start menu I have) - right? What is the entry? -- Glen Ventura MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 CompTIA A+ It was just a text file, and I would like to know where a log of these recent document history entries is being stored, besides the usual, well known places. Do you have .txt files set to open with something other than Notepad? If so, this may keep its recently-opened list somewhere unusual (in a .ini in its own area, or in its own area of the registry) - though I wouldn't have thought that would affect the start menu list. And that may be it, for all I know. But I'm not sure if the recent files opened by an app, and stored in the program's .ini file, even appear in the registry. But a scan of the registry (using regedit) showed no trace of this text document's name. I often use Metapad, Notepad, Editpad Lite, and can't remember which :-) But what's interesting is that a std registry cleaner couldn't (successfully) remove that one entry, but for most of the time, it does just fine (which is about all I ever use it for) |

Could it possibly be a system file? Have you checked that in Folder OptionsView you have both "Do not show hidden files and folders" and "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" selected? I find Ccleaner handy for clearing MRU. |

Just "what" text file, located where, opened with what program.... and listed where, in what specific MRU list? You are not providing any specifics. -- Glen Ventura MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 CompTIA A+ |
