Default Videos causing computer to hang

Hello

Iv recently had to reinstall my operating system. I'v installed SP3 and
installed all windows updates. All my device drivers, including my
graphics card, are up to date.

Since then though, I'v been having trouble with playing any video files
in Windows Media Player. This problem seems to apply to WMP 9 and 11,
haven't tried it in WMP 10 yet.

I'm able to play .avi files as long as I don't have any additional
codecs installed, however I only get sound with no video due to the lack
of required codecs. If i try to play those same .avi files with the
required codecs installed, WMP and explorer hang when trying to connect.
This hanging also happens when I try to play .wmv or .mpeg files,
regardless of whether or not I have codecs installed.

Explorer also hangs if I so much as open a folder containing an mpeg
file. When either of these problems occurs, i have to restart my
computer to get explorer back to normal. What I have noticed is that
although its hanging, there is very little hard drive activity.

So far I'v tried installing codecs, such as the most recent versions of
Xvid, DivX and the XP Codec pack, 1 at a time to see if one of them was
causing it, but the problem happens with all of them.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening and how I
fix it?

Video does use alot of the systems resources..Try playing a video again,if
it fails,open event viewer,locate the error/warning,& get details.You might
also, update Direct X,if not already done, also,go to run, typeXDIAG Run the
Direct X tests....
