I am currently using Trend Micro on my Dell Laptop with Windows XP,
which expires the end of January. Is there a short list of security
software i should consider that might be better than Trend Micro?

Avast.
http://www.avast.com. It's free and much better at detecting
viruses than Trend Micro. You can use the XP firewall.

I used to use Avast, and it is still a good program to be sure, but for
the last few months I have been using MSE instead and am happy with it.
Besides being an AV program, Windows Defender is "built in" to it.

I use the Windows Firewall and have a FW protected router.

I guess the link would help. w

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will responses.

I'll start by saying that I don't think any security "suite" is a
good choice. It'd be better to use smaller, less-resource-draining
stand-alone products.

I had used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton
Internet Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP,
all without any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that.
But it's been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee
products. Their quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were
acquired by Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security came up for renewal (at a cost substantially higher
than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less expensive
solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of GriSoft's AVG
(
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ). It proved to be easily
installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I was
pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable improvement in
my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec product. Another
free (for personal use) anti-virus product is AVAST! Home Edition
(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), which is what I've used
without problems on both WinXP Pro and Vista Business.

The best AV software is ESET NOD32, you can get just the AV or a
full suite including FW for a little bit more. But there are
many perfectly good, and many free, firewalls out there (NOT
including Zone Alarm).

Be aware that no single security program will catch /everything/
and many give false alarms.

Lots of good security products at variouis discount stores -
like http://store.purplus.net/ - but usually no tech support
unless bought from manuf. - not that I think you'd need it.

ESET:
http://www.purplus.net/search/search...urplus&query=e
set&x=15&y=10

Others:
http://store.purplus.net/inse.html

They have Trend Micro Anti-Spyware 3.0 for $4.95 in their
clearance section, BTW.

Google for "discount software".

Anyway, if you **think** while online, scan everything you DL,
and clean your caches etc. after every online session you should
be fine.

Also get Spybot Search & Destroy and run it once a week or so to
make sure you haven't picked up anything. Malwarebytes' Anti-
Malware is good too, both free.

I used it for a VERY short while and it drove me crazy, I know
people who have ALL dumped it for the same reason, and 90% of
Usenet posts about it are bitching about how awful it is.

Once you get it to work OK - which CAN be a problem, see below -
it will do the job, but you have to have a LOT of patience with
it and it WILL repeatedly ask stupid questions which can drive
you nuts.

There is also an issue with making it run properly - on some
computers it just will NOT run, or cause some stupid problem,
and it being free, there is little support, and NO useful
support. I've been there.

Most other firewalls are "setup once and forget it" (unless you
make major changes to your system or decide on some new internet
software). ZoneAlarm bothers you with stupid questions ALL the
time. Plus, other firewalls that I've tried were installed and
/worked/ - ZA required a lot of fiddling and it was just pure
frustration.

I've used ZA firewall since shortly after it's inception in 2000 and the
suites since 2001 or 2002, and have not had the problems you mention. There
was one release 2 or 3 years ago that caused XP shutdown problems, but that
was fixed within a week or so and is hardly a reason for condemnation. The
one thing you need to realize about people bitching in newsgroups and forums
is that they are having problems. It's rare that you see a post with the
subject line "I use WinXP and I LOVE it!!" That's just not the way it works
:-)

There is support through the forums for the free version, just not from
CheckPoint itself. I've found that same scenario to be true with a lot of
software that offers both free and paid versions. In most cases, forum
support was better and/or quicker than phone/email support with the company.

I've set it up and run it on numerous computers (friends and family, not
just my own) and have never had it "just not run." My guess would be that in
those instances, there was something else that was the root cause of it not
running.

There is a "learning" mode that ZA uses on initial installation/upgrade that
does ask quite a few questions. It's just wanting you to confirm whether or
not a program should have internet access, server privileges, etc. Once that
period is over (2-3 weeks, I think), it only asks for confirmation on new
programs, or on major updates to existing programs. I never really found
that to be a fault. In fact, I like to know what's trying to get through,
either in or out.

Am I 100% satisfied with it? No, but then, I can't think of a single program
that I can say I am.
Would I recommend it to others? Yes. If I didn't, I wouldn't continue to use
it for as long as I have.
Would I say it's the best on the market? No, but it's the best for me and a
lot of other people.

Just like everything else, users need to try different versions of an
application and make that decision themselves. I'm not here to tell someone
NOT to use a particular product, but I am more than happy to share my
personal experiences with it, be it good or bad. I try not to judge
something based on the word of another person without at least trying it
myself, and that has sometimes gotten me into trouble, but at least I
learned from it. I used to think I didn't like grits, but then I tried them
with shrimp gravy :-).

It could be that you are not doing any meaningful with your computer.
All you do is lure men to your house so that you can s u c k their balls
or ask your sister to do it for you. Now when you do this, the only
virus you can get is AIDS and you are not likely to admit this in public.

Hope this answers your question.

Typical comment from a foul mouthed Limey. Why do you insist in making an

BLOCK YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE from being viewed!!!!

This is upsetting, thought I should pass it along. Check your
driver's license... Now you can see anyone's Driver's License
on the Internet, including your own!
I just searched for mine and there it was...picture and all!
Thanks Homeland Security!

Privacy, where Is our right to it?
I definitely removed mine; I suggest you all do the same.....
Go to the website and check it out. Just enter your name, City and
state to see if yours is on file. After your license comes on the
screen, click the box marked "Please Remove". This will remove it
from public viewing, but not from law enforcement.

Avira AntiVirus (free) or eSet NOD32 (AntiVirus only - pay) for your
antivirus solution.
MalwareBytes (occassional scans - free) or MalwareBytes (runs at all times -
pay) for your antimalware solution.

Free to less than $100.

No "all-in-one" suites at all. No third-party firewalls.
