high cpu usage/interrupts

hello..I have a dell m5030 laptop (v160 processor with 2 gig ram). Had for
a month..the cpu usage goes to 100% it seems at random, making it incredibly
slow. the only resolve is to restart the computer. I have process explorer
and it seems that the system/interrupt is hogging the cpu.

this laptop came with all the bells and whistles on it so I don’t think I
need to update the driver. I have removed the battery and have tried
turning off the wifi. It still doesn’t drop. any advise will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

Does Process Explorer say it is the DPCs? I am just making sure. If it
is interrupts like you say, does it happen more during hard drive usage?

pre-installs onto their machines ?

No such process is named "system/interrupt". There's System, System
Idle Process, svchost, and others but you'll have to be exact for anyone
else to know what process you are talking about.

If it's svchost, each instance of it rolls together several NT services.
You can use SysInternals' Process Explorer (which you say you have) to
look at what services are rolled into an instance of svchost that is
pegging CPU usage at 100%.

Huh? I am running Process Explorer right now under XP (is it the same
for Windows 7 or do I need a different version?). And it lists System
Idle Process, but breaks it down further. It lists three more under this
one and they are called:

Interrupts (Hardware Interrupts)
DPCs (Deferred Procedure Calls)
System (which has all other OS processes listed under it)

Process explore states system and under that two subcatagories../interrupts
and smss,exe...wish I could send a screenshot. and the description is "
hardware interrupts and dpc's"

yes I uninstalled most of the bloatware that came with the laptop that was
hindering the startup.

everything...there is a kill process option, but when I click on that it
just says "cannot perform action" I think process explorer is more of a
reference tool and you probably need to perform any outside actions through
"task manager"

Process Explorer DOES have a listing under System named "Interrupts". Mine
shows as using between 0.05-0.07 CPU. It's description is Hardware
Interrupts and DPCs. The OP probably needs to find out which hardware item
on their system is demanding so much attention.

disabling the Bluetooth?

added nothing new..however I noticed one thing: previously I changed the
touchpad sensitivity cause everytime I hovered the pointer over anything it
would automatically click it on....now that I set it back to default I have
not gotten cpu usage over 30% go figure...

hello..not sure I anyone is still paying attention to this thread, I have
just noticed that when I go to any of those flash video sites (ahem), after
a while I get 100% cpu usage and interrupts are 80%..so I lower my laptop
screen as if closing the laptop (putting in sleep or hibernation or whatever
mode), wait awhile and raise the screen up again. the interrupts go back
down to 1.40 and cpu usage is 11%

There are two ways you as a user can change hardware acceleration
on Flash video.

1) This is copied from another site. This is a general setting for the GPU.

"Right click the desktop, select Change Resolution, click on the
Advanced settings link, go to Troubleshoot tab, click Change settings
button, move the slider left to the third notch and click OK."

That would change the general level of hardware acceleration. All
graphics would be affected in some way by doing that, such as 3D
game play or Windows Aero effects.

2) A few people have trouble with the hardware acceleration features
of Adobe Flash plugin.

If you click within the Flash video window frame (perhaps right click,
not sure), you can bring up the Flash Settings dialog, which is
kinda small. There is a tick box in there that allows enabling or
disabling the hardware acceleration. Disabling it, may cause your
interrupt rate to drop.

The difference that makes, is as follows. I played a test movie at 640x480,
and it used maybe 7% CPU. Switching to "full screen mode", causes Flash to
scale the video image. If you leave "Hardware Acceleration" enabled, the GPU
in the computer is used to scale the image to the full screen size. If the
GPU does it, the CPU stays at a low usage (5-7%). With hardware acceleration
via the GPU disabled, the CPU does the scaling, and it takes 40% CPU.

If you choose to use that option (disable hardware acceleration in Flash),
you might still see a fair bit of CPU used, but the interrupts level will
stay at a lower level.

Adding to what Paul said in his reply. You never mentioned what kind of
system you are having trouble with. I have a few machines here that I
know Windows 7 would have very similar problems like those that you had
mentioned.

Also newer versions of software and drivers are not always best. You
might have better luck with an older version of Flash Player.
