Default Can I add my own short cut to Windows Explorer?

Hi All,

Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer.

When I open Windows Explorer, the left column is full
of useless shortcuts (well, useless to me). IS drives
me nuts trying to get to the C: drive.

Is there a way I can add a short cut that would actually be
useful to me to the list?

Is there a way I can have all the other useless short
cuts minimized?

Many thanks,
-T

You can remove the links that are useless to you by right-clicking on
them and selecting "Remove from the list"

To add new items to the list, you can just open the folder with Windows
Explorer and it will added to the list.

It is that simple in Windows.

Hi Guy,

I right clicked on "videos" and saw nothing about removing
anything.
I also right clicked on c:\drives and found no way to add
it to the short cuts on the right column.

What am I missing?

Perhaps I misunderstood your question. This is what you want:

If you drag a shortcut of C: to your desktop, clicking it will open
Explorer with C: selected and expanded.

Todd, you might like Hot Key Plus. I have used it for a dozen years or so
to start programs, go to web sites, open Explorer to a particular folder,
etc. I use it constantly.

To use it, one sets up a hot key combo with it. That combo consists of
one or more of four control keys plus any other key. Once set up,
pressing those keys does whatever you have designated them to do.
Naturally, Hot Key+ has to be running so it can monitor KB input.

If you mean the Favorites and Libraries, the answer is yes.

As always, it requires a bit of registry hacking. Standard warnings
and disclaimers apply. I'm being scant on exact instructions on how to
do this because it is very easy to mess up your computer with a bad
registry hack. If you don't know what you are doing in there, keep out

Note you might need to take permission of the various registry keys
first.

To hide libraries:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}\ShellFolder]
"QueryForOverlay"=""
"HideOnDesktopPerUser"=""
"PinToNameSpaceTree"=""
"Attributes"=dword:b090010d

(to restore Libraries, change "Attributes"=dword:b080010d)

To hide favorites:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=dword:a9400100

(to restore Favorites, change "Attributes"=dword:a0900100)

This should simplify the left pane greatly. If you don't use it, you
can also disable Homegroup.

Would it not be easier to use the link John provided?

Well, possibly, had I seen it at the time I posted. Usenet propogation
is odd.

Anyway, John just showed how to remove Favorites. I showed you how to
zap the Libraries too. And my answer wasn't dependent on a website
that may not exist in 5 years. You never know who will be searching
Usenet Archives in the future ;-)
