There's supermarket bread and there's bakery bread. There are some

good

most supermarkets have their own bakeries and bake fresh on site, in
addition to the packaged stuff.

Maybe so, but that's very different from the bread in real bakeries.

You order and get exactly what you want: nothing, cream, double milk,
etc etc. "Double double" means double cream with double sugar.

Interesting! I've never heard "double milk" or "double sugar, but I'd
have no trouble understanding it. But if someone said "double double,"
I wouldn't know what he meant.

No.

Yes it is. Pick up a calculator and type 2x2. Educate yourself.

Interesting. Yes, we all have different tastes and different opinions,
but it surprises me that anyone would feel that way.

At our house we make what we call "real" food -- or at least largely (we
also have our share of junk, too). We make our own bread from scratch, make
mac and cheese from scratch (sometimes going as far as to make our own
pasta, though less often now than in the past), make our own soups, etc. We
do not buy much prepared stuff.

I'm the cook in our family, and I also make most things from scratch.
We buy very little prepared food. But it sounds like you make more
things than I do.

I should give credit where credit is due: my wife makes more than I do,
though I do tend to make more of the sauces and have thing like my own lower
healthier pancake / waffle mix (though you cannot get waffle irons today
without Teflon, which we do not like).

One thing you do that I don't is make pasta. Although many people
think that fresh pasta is better than dried, most chefs disagree. I
disagree too. They are *different*, rather than one being better.

We do buy pasta as well... the home made stuff can be great for ravioli and
some other dishes, but even when I make the cheese sauce for mac and cheese
I mostly use store bought macaroni.

Oh, and we do use a fair mount of spiralized vegetable "pasta" -- alone or
replacing half or so of the pasta (not with mac and cheese, but with other
recipes). It definitely is different but better for you and, I think, tastes
great. I do like the texture of real pasta so I mostly do half and half.

As far as I'm concerned, they are two very different things:
hamburgers and fast food hamburgers. They are so different that an
example of one shouldn't be compared with an example of the other;
it's almost like comparing fried chicken with lamb chops.

I find a lot of things (including biscuits and ice cream), where the
fast food (and grocery store) versions are very different from the
homemade one.

Agreed. I do not buy much but have friend who works at a local bakery and
she sometimes gives us their leftover bread... excellent. And we like
Einstein's bagels. Have tried to make my own bagels with, shall we say, less
than pleasing results.

Then again, before it sound like I am claiming to eat only healthy foods or
to be so great in the kitchen, made a cake the other day (easy recipe even)
and it collapsed and was, well, OK but a bit dense. Does not help that I
live at a relatively high elevation and recipes have to be modified
somewhat, but, really, I have made this cake many times before. Sometimes
the great kitchen gods smile on you... sometimes they do not.

Dash or two of garlic powder
Dash or two of chili powder
Salt to taste (about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon)
Any other spices? You decide.

Mix it all up, let sit for about 1/2 hour for oatmeal to soak up juices,
form into patties, and broil or barbecue.

My hamburger recipe:

Sufficient ground *beef* for the number of patties you want, approx
*8*oz per patty.

Nothing else.

Barbecue

Better yet is not using store-bought ground beef but buying large
pieces of meat and chopping it yourself in a food processor. If you do
that and wash it before chopping, you can make it as rare as you want
(I like it *very* rare) without worrying about e. coli.

So you also support the unrestricted firing of automatic weapons in

from the bullets.

Actually requiring potential victims to move away is denying their right
to enjoy those places. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE to be putting that poison in
