O.T. Macrium Updates
I have a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender and Windows firewall. (1) TB HD Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz Ram 12.0 GB System type : 64-bit operating system I also have I have a Dell Optiplex 780 Tower, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1, with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender and Windows firewall. Intel (R) Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz 4GB RAM, 750 GB HD System type : 64-bit operating system and (external hard drives) (8500) WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive (780) Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Here's the problem; I had a Macrium update on the 780 so that it's now V7.2.3897 but on the 8500 it's V6.3.1852 and I checked for updates and there were none. This should be updating the same as the 780 and both should have the same versions. So I don't understand why it doesn't? In any case, could you please give me a clean link to update the 8500 so that it's current. Thanks, Robert |

Thanks, Robert https://www.tenforums.com/backup-res...ree-v6-v7.html "Just download MR free from their site and upgrade, that's what I did and it preserved all my settings but had to make new rescue USB. There are some new options in v7.xx and you may want to take a look at them." ******* First, look in C:\Program Files or in C:\Program Files (x86) and see which of the two folders has a "Macrium" folder in it. You either did a 32 bit or a 64 bit install of Macrium 6, and it would be good to "match" that with Macrium 7. The idea being, it might preserve your existing settings and schedule better. If C:\Program Files (x86) has "Macrium", set "Options" in the downloader, to 32 bit. If C:\Program Files has "Macrium", set "Options" in the downloader, to 64 bit. This downloader stub, will download the two files for you. Execute it, and set Options properly (just the 32 bit or 64 bit radio buttons, pick one). https://updates.macrium.com/reflect/v7/ReflectDLHF.exe The rest of it, you can likely leave at defaults. Take careful note, of *where* the downloads will be going. Mine says "My Documents" is getting the files. Write down where the download is destined so you can find the one or two files later. The install should get the files from My Documents and start the install automatically. If it doesn't, go to My Documents (or whatever folder you set it to download into), and manually kick off the install. You could do the upgrade with just the EXE file and no WinPE files. If you then make Rescue Media, it will prompt for the WinPE files, allowing you to select something (the main Macrium program can also download WinPE content on demand). If you download both files using ReflectDLHF, then the tool should be able to make Rescue Media with no further downloads. It's too bad the "Check For Updates" doesn't work. It didn't work on mine either. Best guess, Paul |

O.T. Macrium Updates
This has nothing to do with the problem but I started
the 780 and ran scans and then it asked to reboot but after coming up the speakers had a red X so I restarted the system and then it came back with a black screen saying the computer couldn't connect with the Internet and contact administrator. I clicked to close it and since then it has stayed a black screen with the curser. I saw no error lights. I waited 5 minutes and nothing so I really hated to do it but I hit the reset button and selected to start Windows normally and everything appears normal. Now that was weird! See what I mean about things like that happening out of the blue. Robert |

It could be that the AV quarantined some system files, and Windows File Protection put them back. I agree with you, that that is weird. Paul |

Thanks, Robert Start Macrium as you would normally start it. By doing that, I hope to identify which version is the current one running your backups. Now, in the window, go to "Help : About Macrium Reflect". The dialog that appears will say Edition: Free Edition (64 bit) or similar. That should be telling you what version is running the machine. If it is the 32 bit version, it would say (32 bit). ******* Next, go to Control Panels : Programs and Features. See if both programs have placed an entry in Programs and Features. Locate the program you don't want and select Remove. But you're not finished yet. Select the remaining Macrium install entry, then select Change then from the dialog with the three entries, select Repair If the first removal operation removes the Macrium service, "repairing" the remaining program will put it back. That isn't absolutely essential, but the idea is, to try to have a bog standard setup when the V7 installer is run. You still have to select a V7 bitness, to go with the remaining one. ******* You could of course, just run the EXE and the software will deal with the carnage. You would still have both versions installed of course. The right one would get upgraded, as long as you downloaded the correct "bitness" using the stub downloader. I don't know why they design stuff this way. Boggles the mind, all the failure modes they inspire with the way they do stuff. Paul |

I always go into the Action Center for
updates. Since I believe you told me to do it that way so I can review whats being updated. This was back when they tried to update into Windows 10 and I didn't want that. Robert |

This was back when they tried to update into Windows 10 and I didn't want that. Robert I get strange ones here too. I had Win10 fall over the other day. Reported it couldn't find the OS, early in the boot process. The OS boot repair tried to fix it. It looked like it tried CHKDSK (based on the time spent), and that still didn't fix it. I booted Windows 7 and ran CHKDSK from there. Nothing was found. And when I tried to boot the broken OS again, it was OK. I can't be 100% sure what fixed it. Probably wasn't anything I did. And more reboots and it's like nothing happened. The Windows Update history isn't very good in Windows 10, so I can't even look at that and check for correlation. They put the day of the update, but not the hour and minute. So if an update comes in that day, but not right before something happens, you can't say for sure that's what did it. If there was a proper timestamp, it would be a lot better. Paul |

The weird part, is I see no evidence the system knows about the Macrium installed in Program Files (x86). But everything looks to have turned out OK. Maybe what happened, is the C:\Program Files (x86)\Macrium contains only a couple "stubborn" files, such as the Macrium mounter service. Maybe it refused to be removed, and that results in a small set of files being left behind. I've had that happen a number of times with other programs here, and didn't think about that possibility when writing up instructions for this. If that install folder isn't a "full" install, then chances are there aren't any services or files associated with services, getting in the way. I just want to make sure there won't be an interaction between the garbage in there, and the proper install folder. And you know (of course), the TrustedInstaller protection on that folder, won't allow easy manual removal. Ah, Windows. Paul |

You would think they would at least give
the basics like accurate timing. I'm no engineer or programmer but even I can understand the importance of accurate timing in a computer. Robert |

I noticed that also that it went into
Downloads vs the Program Files (X86) but I wasn't going to mess around with the default destination but thought it strange that the Macrium folder in is one location and the downloads are in another. Thanks again, Robert |

Robert The computer has the records (somewhere), it's just the values aren't being printed on the screen. I suppose it upsets the "look" of the screen or something. There is a log for servicing that should have the entries. The file would be kinda big, so you'd have to trawl through it looking for the breadcrumbs needed. Paul |

I had an update to the Macrium on the 8500
yesterday and thought I would update the 780 today since I'm going to be doing my backup tomorrow. When I logged on the 780 it showed I had a Macrium update but I could not get it to run. I tried clicking on the message itself and also opened Macrium but no updates appeared. Then tried going just to Macrium but still no updates. I restarted and powered it off several times and nothing so I followed your same instructions to install Macrium on the 780 and now its the same versions on both machines. Interestingly, it downloaded in the Program Files on the 780 vs the Downloads on the 8500 but why didn't it update when I opened Macrium? Robert |

Robert The Macrium philosophy isn't tolerant of user-manipulation. Either you do it their way, or not at all. That's the impression I've gotten on a couple of occasions when trying to "coax" stuff to happen. Downloading a fresh copy into your Downloads, should work. Even if nothing else works. Paul |
