Hi Rob,
It is a matter of personal preference as to whether you "top post" or "bottom post". I prefer top, others prefer bottom posting. I think it is easier to follow the thread with top posting. As I mentioned, I remember what the OP was, all I care to see is the responses to the OP, and not have to scroll through up to 10 BM's or rhetoric to see a three word reply. This post is an example, I have deleted all of the trailing posts in this response. JAX "Rob" wrote in message ... "JAX" wrote in message ... Good point Bruce. Ok, I'm back and NO I didn't intend starting this and after 2 days away from
my beloved pc got quite a shock to find all this discussion going on. (I'm a "she" by the way). I asked a question hoping to get one reply, not find about 30. Never did I dream I would start such a commotion but thankyou to everyone for your views - it was enjoyable reading, quite entertaining at times. I realized my error in asking the question originally in reply to a post on a different topic - Oohps, not meant to change the topic are we, so I posted a fresh question as Rifleman's LOL did not answer my query (yes rifleman, that was a reply to my reply/question, not to the original poster) I had assumed "top posting" was starting at the top but thought I may have it wrong when someone complained about it as personally I hate having to scroll down through a heap of stuff I've already read in a previous thread. However, when posting to a group I like to try and do what the readers prefer - if they are kind enough to give me some of their own time to read a question and answer it, let them read it how they want it. Judging by the comments here, I think "top posting" wins so I will continue to do this. I am also in a time zone of GMT+10 so unless I want to get out of bed in the middle of the night, I don't get your replies until you are all asleep in bed. My apologies for writing so much but I want you to understand I did not start this intentionally. Thanks Everyone Robyn "Bruce Chambers" wrote in message ... Greetings --
Thanks for laying my concerns to rest; I do so dislike being "taken in." I'm glad to hear that my suspicions were unfounded. A search for knowledge should never be discouraged, and your goal of adjusting to posting style to fit each specific news group is laudable. Just remember that you'll never please everybody, and don't take any unfavorable responses personally. Way to go Robyn,
"Judging by the comments here, I think "top posting" wins so I will continue to do this." Yes, top posting is at the top. "I don't get your replies until you are all asleep in bed." Who said we all sleep in beds? (chiding) Cheers, JAX "Robyn" wrote in message ... Clever little boy aren't you? Get lost. This is where big people play.
You're too dense to understand humor aren't you? "Rifleman" wrote in message ... "Box134" wrote in message ... Bruce Chambers top posts. How do you explain that? Whatever Bruce does is good enough for me. Brown nose. |

I am "smart enough" to remember what the original post was. I have blisters on my middle finger from scrolling down to see what the reply is from those who bottom post. Try your space bar when you run into those posts. Ctrl+End works too but space bar is easier. And when reaching the end of a post, pressing space bar again will also advance to the next unread message. -- Sharon F MS MVP - Windows XP Shell/User |

: To paraphrase Mr Spock "Top posting is illogical, Captain". Who answeres a question /before/ it's asked?! But, The question has been asked already. Otherwise, you won't be posting a reply. Duh! People who top-post are too lazy to snip, IMNSHO. And to say it's out of "consideration" is complete ********, and you know it. People have to scroll down to see what the original question was! If you missed the original post. Then YOU can scroll down to read it. Why should we be forced to scroll through a post we've already read?? Especially, When as noted before, we have to scroll through 15kb or more of repeated post to read a two or three word response. -- David Programmers write "Help Files" for a reason. use them. Ok, I'll ask again and maybe get a polite reply instead of Rifleman's useless LOL? What is top posting? Yes I'm serious and yes I've read about newsgroup ettiquette. Top posting or bottom posting doesn't matter as much as the effort you force the reader to make to read useful content. If you top post, make sure the part of the message you are replying to is within decent scrolling distance by trimming the included quoted text. If you bottom post, trim the quoted text heavily so that readers can scroll easily to your reply. The one thing people hate the most is scrolling three pages to read "me too" as the useless reply. In my opinion if you are too lazy to trim, you should top post. There is a third option called "inline" where you embed your reply inside the quoted text. This is most useful when you have replies to multiple parts of the quoted text. Be careful about quote marks and indentation so people aren't confused about which is your text and which is quoted. -- Kent W. England, Microsoft MVP for Windows Security |

If you're implying there's a correct way, there's not. It can be irritating
trying to read a thread (group of sequential replies to same original message) if repliers are using both top and bottom posting. Up here is the way MS OE newsreader replies by defaut. This is called top posting. "Robyn" wrote in message ... Ok, I'll ask again and maybe get a polite reply instead of Rifleman's useless LOL? In the middle means you're replying to what's immediately above, not below. Snipping means to delete some information in the original post, then reply below that to the information that was left. This is much worse that top-posting in some circles. What is top posting? Yes I'm serious and yes I've read about newsgroup ettiquette. Robyn Down here is normally used for typical usenet replies. A typical add-on newsreader will reply down here. This is neither right or wrong. This was the only location normally used for usenet replies for many years. Dave |
