Frank,
You don't remember your own words, Frank.
You complained that I *ignored* your "solution", remember.

That's the whole point, Frank!
a. It had nothing to do with the APK backup, so it wasn't a solution, and,
b. It doesn't work anyway.

And yet, you never once provided a solution.

That's the whole point, Frank!
a. What you say I "ignored" had absolutely nothing to do with the APK

b. It doesn't work anyway.

Yes, I do. You OTOH don't know/remember left from right.

You complained that I *ignored* your "solution", remember.

Yes, but that was for a *different* issue (than *both* APK backup
*and* general backup). If you think otherwise, then *prove* it with a
direct quote (and URL of that source).

That's the whole point, Frank!
a. It had nothing to do with the APK backup, so it wasn't a solution, and,

Of course it wasn't. I *said* so, didn't I!?

b. It doesn't work anyway.

It works fine for me, but then I'm severely hindered by actual
expertise, experience, intelligence, etc., not to mention knowing how to
do research and troubleshoot.

I think your screenshots give clues as to what may be causing your
problems. But I'm afraid you'll have to figure it out for yourself. You
no longer - if you ever did - deserve any further help from me, or
anybody for that matter.

Have fun.

Default [OT] How to use a 'news:' URL

Because it's a news URL, there's no need to search for it, because
your newsreader should be able to show it to you (assuming it's not
expired from your news server). Figure that, a newsreader actually
showing news articles! What *will* they think of next!? A webbrowser
showing webpages!?

Like for a web ('http:') URL, you don't search for it, you just
'execute' it. Same thing with a news URL.

Ok, this is interesting to me. How do I tell my news reader,
Thunderbird, to find a message by knowing the URL? Because my
Thunderbird can only search (quick filter button) by "sender",
"recipient", or "subject". The body is not downloaded, so it can not
actually search there, it finds nothing. The button for "body" is there,
but does not work.

As nospam wrote, clicking on the news URL should work.

Note 'should'. I tried it yesterday and I can't get it to work. I've
set up TB's 'System Integration', (Windows) 'Internet Options'
(Programs (Set programs)) and 'Associate a file type or protocol with a
program', but it doesn't work.

This used to work out-of-the-box with Outlook Express (when putting
the news URL in *Internet Explorer*'s URL box).

The specific setting which *should* (IMO) do the trick, but doesn't
work for me is this (English Windows 8.1 version):

Control Panel - Programs - Default Programs - Associate a file type
or protocol with a program

This gives a very long list, first for all the 'Extensions' and at the
end for all the 'Protocols'.

I the 'Protocols' list, there should be an entry:

Name Description Current Default
---- --------------------- ---------------
NEWS Thunderbird (News) URL Thunderbird

That implies that a news URL should be handled by Thunderbird, but
when I click on a news URL *in* TB, TB does not handle it, let alone
that a news URL *outside* TB will be handled by TB.

If by any chance, you do not get the above entry in the 'Protocols'
list, then check this:

Thunderbird - Tools - Options - 'Advanced' tab - System Integration
- Check Now...

The 'System Integration' popup should say:

"Use Thunderbird as the default client for:
V Email
V Newsgroups"

If you do not get this list, let me know.

Sorry to be of so little help. As I said, it used to work for OE
(+IE).

If anyone know how to get this to work for Thunderbird, please let us
know.

[...]

In your defense, but not an excuse for dodging my question: You're not
the only one who doesn't know how handle a news URL or/and how to look
up an article with their newsreader, given a news URL.

Well, I go to Edit/Find/search messages, select "message-ID", then enter
the MID, and tick "run search on server" (an option I did not see years
before), then it does the search fast enough.

Great! Thanks! I think I looked for something like that, but
apparently not good enough.

So that's at least a workaround. It's still a search instead of a
direct lookup, but it's better than nothing.

Now we 'only' need someone who can show us how to teach TB to do a
direct lookup of a news URL.

that's because thunderbird is a buggy mess.

It doesn't here.

Right click offers to open in browser, then a dialog ask to say what
application to open it with (choose other application). And it does not
suggest any by default, just the entire disk tree.

Well, I forced "thunderbird", and did nothing (Linux here, but should
not matter much).

I think I tried on this or another computer some weeks back, and it
launched firefox, which did nothing or complained, I don't remember for
sure.

Aye. It's been a known issue with thunderchicken for years. Never
fixed, amongst other things. Xnews has it's own share of.. unique
gotchas, but, as long as the server actually has the article, it'll
pull it up via clicking the news url link.

Despite Xnews data files not being officially documented, they're easy
to reverse engineer and I like that. It also looks alot like
NewsXpress, and, I used that for years prior.. so...

Yes, but the point is that not every NNTP client supports locating
"news://..." URLS. And it is demonstrated.

Adjust, leave delimiters on the outside.

Go to this website, and paste the modified string here.

http://al.howardknight.net/

This avoids details about your newsreader, to be doing it
on the web.

Another way to do it:

Enter this URL in Seamonkey browser (which is a suite and
includes a news reader).

news://news.aioe.org:119/pql56t.8k8....individual.net

That syntax would work in Thunderbird... if we could figure
out a way to enter a URL :-) I haven't figured out where that
is hiding on TBird.

Maybe you could call TBird from the command line and do it
or something.

that just means you're using a broken news client. replace it with a
