Default Ruined CD's XP, Drive orCD Mfgr?

Hi:

I'm running Win XP Home Version 2002 SP 1 with all updates on eMachines
W2686 AMD AthlonXP 2600+ 2.12 Ghz with 512mb RAM. Only DVD/CDROM drive is a
LITE-ON COMBO LTC-4816H.

Problem: several times now I have attempted to copy some files to a new CD-R
(Imation 700mb 1x-12x). The process goes along writing and advising
completing to "5 sec to complete" hangs for a while then reports something
wrong with CD may be unusable and, of course, it is at that point unusable.

Is this a common problem? How do I determiine the culprit: xp, drvie, or cd?

Thank you,
Kelwin

I'm having exactly the same problem with a CD burner that used to work fine.
(I'm using plain vanilla WinXP's built-in software.) I've been following
messages on this and other MS groups and I've seen other people complaining
about "suddenly" being unable to burn CDs.

I'm beginning to think that one or more recent WinXP updates have screwed
something up somewhere.

Thanks. I probably should have noted that I, too, am using XP's built-in CD
writing software.

Is it possible you purchased CD's marked "For high speed drives only"?

We got a box by mistake labeled that way, and they simply did not work!

Still haven't figured out for sure what a high speed drive is, but I think
it means
complying to USB2 standards or some such thing??

NO! For CDs, high speed drives are greater than 4x/8x write speed. USB2
does not count.

Try writing at a slower speed (4X or 8X, for example).

Same result. The burn goes fine until the last 5 seconds and then the drive
spits the disk out saying it's gone bad.

Have you tried Nero burn software? It's the best.

WinXP's built-in software does everything that I want to do.

Now if it would only do that...

On Fri, 12 Mar 2004 12:16:39 -0600, "Kelwin Delaunay"
tickled my privates with this:

One thought; I don't know if this is still the case; it was discovered
a few years ago that, even though cdroms and cdr's etc were made for
media containing a capacity of 650 megs (cd's, in plain language), an
unsupported capability existed to read higher than that, up to 700
megs. I don't know if the cdrom drive industry officially supports
that spec, or still goes with the original red book audio capacity of
650.

I've never dealt with this, since I stick to standard 650 meg media;
my impression has always been that if your hardware will read that
extra 50 megs, it's icing on the cake; if it won't, you should use the
standard.

Since you have a combo drive at that, is it possible the drive simply
won't deal with that unsupported overage? Is this the first time it's
happened with 700 meg media?

Sorry, I didn't mention: I have also had standard 650mb cd's killed by this
process.

Thanks,

Most likely cause is that this drive just does not work quite as the
inbuilt burning expects it to. If that happens it is best to cut losses
on the inbuilt burning (which is anyway very limited) and get a third
party package

Mine DID work the way the inbuilt burner expects it to. It just stopped. I
*think* after some recent but unidentified update.

Because I don't use the burner very often I didn't notice the problem
existed until just recently so I can't be sure that the problem is related
to an update or, if it is, which one.

Go to Adaptec.com to download the ASPI drivers:

Read the instructions for what to install the ASPI drivers for XP.

How do I determine whether I have "Win XP 32 bit" or "Win XP 64 bit"?

If you have to ask, you have 32bit.
