Default Sounds won't play in XP

I can't get my PC to play sounds. I know they are there
and the kit works because I can manually play them in
Media Player, but I can't get it to play system sounds or
external software sound automatically. I know there is a
checkbox un-ticked somewhere but I can't find it!
Grateful for a clue.

Kelly has a fix at line 6 to restore the default system sounds.
(reboot afterwards)
