CD/DVDrom drive has a bad block

Windows XP Home Edition reported this , and said Windows read the bad memory
block in the D: drive , the CD/DVD combo drive .
Can I RUN , for example , fdisk to tell Windows to check the CD/DVD Rom
Drive .
Could someone give me any hints as to where to look for something like a CD
drive formatting utility . I see BART has a testing utility and I bought Nero
6.6 which has test in it too , but I want to clear the bad block , or is
that a hardware problem ?

I don't think it's possible - bad blocks only occur on hard drives.
No you can't run any utilities on it because you can't edit a CD with
re-recording it or cloning it, etc. I know CHKDSK doesn't work on it, having
tried it not too long ago.

It's possible for a CD?DVD/CD-RW etc. to have an area that is bad. (Read
error of some type)
The non RW's (unless multisession) are stuck with the error, and whatever
it's consiquences are. The multisessions may allow you to re record the
data in another area. The RW's may allow the error to be removed along with
data, and re recorded.

All this sort of thing involves use of CD/DVD applications and utilities,
not included with windows.

Remember that some CD's and DVD's may use a form of copy protection that
shows up as an error in a specific location in the data.

Disk duplicators may use an analog copy method that copies tracks or whole
CD's including the data "error".

A CD-ROM bad block can be related to a dirty drive, use a cleaning disk,
dirty or scratched media, clean the media or replace it.. You may need to
restart the burning app, log off and log on again or reboot warm/or cold if
necessary..
It should clear up and go away, if not, you might try a firmware update for
the problem drive or replace the drive, if all else fails..
Make sure your Nero 6.6 Burning Rom, InCd, etc. is updated too..

Windows definitely reported drive D: as having a Bad Block and drive D: is
the CD/DVD Combo drive . One or two cd's I recorded to have got errors on
them . It's the bad block I would like to get rid of . Fom what I see writing
zero's is something that might clear a bad block and now I remember even
Windows can't remove a bad block from a hard drive . The drive will play
DVD's and write to a CDR ok . Windows also gave a message that the D: drive
was not digital compatible , maybe that has something to do with the bad
block , and recommended in the message to upgrade to "newer Media" . I
thought the message meant newer cd's but I had used a X52 speed cd and
written to it . I am studying up on Drive speeds , CD speeds and recording to
CD's . I don't really have to use CDRW cd's .

thankyou Jaymon - I suppose I have been busy -
I keep the drive clean inside and out but there was a time when I used
old media and I had to change settings . I may have done something wrong then
and I was experimenting with INCD . The drive still does everthing it's
supposed to do and seemingly without problems .
but - why would Windows tell me the drive does not support Digital Media
when the drive has a digital cable socket ? I think Windows told me this when
I had been trying to use a cd I had used in the drive previously , and the cd
did play later .
