Slow Starts
Running XP Home w/SP2.
All of a sudden it takes an abnormally long time for folders to open or programs to start when I click a desktop icon. I've defragged, run virus and spyware scans, and also run a couple of regisry repair programs...nothing helps. You got any good ideas g? |

You can (I've done it) bloat one so huge that it's full of pure unadulterated silliness and still get the same benchmarks before and after. Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors. Anyhow, not an idea (yet) but a question... All of a sudden... I'm a firm believer in no such critter as "all of a sudden" in most cases. Did you install anything prior? Make any changes prior? Of that's caused by shell context handler's loaded though - and this is insane - I recently saw the same thing happen but (believe it or not) it was just a single side of RAM that died on double sided RAM. Slow Starts
My other computer (not the one that I use now), have big slowdown as well. It
is pentium 3, happened after installing sp2, but after several restarts, it started to run normally. Slow Starts
You need to Run msconfig and go to the StartUp Tab and see all the applications that you running on Startup. I am sure there are some that you do not need that is requiring additional time both at Startup and Shutdown.
Also if you do not have CCleaner installed it's free and one of the best for cleaning out temporary and redundant files. Go to: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/ "Dick Reuben" wrote in message ... Ken Blake, MVP had this to say: My reply is at the bottom of your sent message: Unlikely that that's the problem, since he says "all of a sudden." My guess is that he just got infested with spyware Yeah my hunch was that his scans had missed something and I'd asked for additional details and didn't get a whole lot to go on in return. So that's pretty much what I just sent 'em though the resulting page is rather generic and due to be updated soon. I was kinda sorta fishing for "well I'd installed _____" from "____" and... Alas, just like fishing, I seldom catch anything that way, just generic responses. -- Galen - MS MVP - Windows (Shell/User & IE) http://dts-l.org/ http://kgiii.info/ "Chance has put in our way a most singular and whimsical problem, and its solution is its own reward." - Sherlock Holmes |
