How download Facebook videos?
I googled the subject, but all I see are software download options? Is
that the only way? Do I have to use an app? Or can I use a W10 procedure? Thanks JS |

Thanks JS https://techwiser.com/download-facebook-video/ "July 31, 2016 Method 5 [why did they bother with the other four ???] For instance, the URL of one video is https://www.facebook.com/FilterCopy/...8620431518242/, Change it to https://m.facebook.com/FilterCopy/vi...8620431518242/ On the incoming page, right click on the video player. You’ll find an option named "Save Video As". You can save the video as an .MP4 file in your computer. " What are the odds that works in the year 2018 ? I would think about as close to zero odds as you can get. It doesn't take much of a code monkey, to block someone from visiting m.facebook.com with a desktop. They can check the UserAgent string on the browser for one thing. That's pretty easy to check. Generally, most people are pretty appreciative of any complicated procedure, that gets them the video. Expecting a built-in function in a browser, is expecting a lot, because for some of these tools, the developer has to tweak the tool *daily* to keep it in a working state. Paul |

I use the Firefox add-in Download Flash and Video to do my downloading. It will scan your current page for any video or flash existence and allow you to select what to download. One of the differences between tools like that, is their method. Some just effectively record the screen as the thing streams. Thus a 10 minute video, takes 10 minutes to record. A "downloader" on the other hand, downloads as fast as their server will allow the file to be handled that way. Which could be a considerably shorter period of time. If the m.facebook.com technique is offering a "Save As" option, well that sounds like the downloader style. I've done Youtube captures (for fun, not with any practical bend), using FFMPEG and gdigrab, with the hardware acceleration turned off in Flash. This was back when Youtube was still using Flash. And it would take 10 minutes to record a 10 minute video. The method wasn't perfect, but it was amusing. I had a few problems with sync between audio and video (which you can correct for "simple" math relations between audio and video, but can't do a thing about if the method "wanders" during the bulk of the video). The YoutubeDL program, which offers a menu of file formats, and allows you to select a format, I think that one is a downloader, and not a streaming trick as such. And a few of the news sites I use, over the years they've had short periods of time where they experiment with offering "Save As", but that doesn't last too long. That's why I'm surprised anyone allows such a thing in 2018. That's not really an "industry practice". You're supposed to hoard your content for some reason :-) Paul |

I'm guessing that the m.facebook thing is to allow videos to be more mobile-friendly, so it can be viewed off-line on a small-screen device. That may be why it's only a small, low-res version. Any larger, higher- res versions seen on their regular web browser interface seem to be only available for on-line viewing. Downloading isn't available. My one Flash downloading Firefox add-on doesn't work on Facebook. |

My one Flash downloading Firefox add-on doesn't work on Facebook. It's possible youtubedl could do it, as I saw some mention it supports more sites than just youtube. But it also requires constant attention, so on any given day could be broken. I might use a Linux version of that in a VM, to keep things neat and tidy. I think youtubedl was even listed to work with one of my Canadian news sites (a site that is pretty picky about its friends). Yeah, facebook is on the list. https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/bl...portedsites.md And this is an example of a typical usage of the program. ******* The "list-formats" option shows low and high res download options, which are a function of all the movie formats a site might have. youtube-dl --list-formats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyQUCYl-ocs 140 m4a audio only DASH audio 128k , m4a_dash container, mp4a.40.2@128k (44100Hz), 5.06MiB 251 webm audio only DASH audio 156k , opus @160k, 5.50MiB 160 mp4 192x144 DASH video 85k , avc1.4d400b, 25fps, video only, 3.30MiB ... Then you download whatever you figure is the right format for the job. I suppose that's dumped into the current working directory. youtube-dl --format 251 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyQUCYl-ocs Paul |
