Default Wireless Zero Configuration - enabling

I have a new Dell laptop, I disabled their utility that manages wireless
from starting up. I set the WZC service to start automatically, and I
changed the properies of the wireless NIC to let Windows manage wireless.

But everytime I restart my laptop, the WZC is not started, and the checkbox
in the NIC properties for wireless is no longer checked off.

What do I need to do to make this work?

How did you disable the Dell "Wlan" utility? I am not aware of the
Dell version but some wireless adapters have their own "service" or an
auto-start tool. As soon as the manufacturer's tools starts, the WZC
is automatically turned off.

Yup, that's what it was. I had removed what I thought it was, from Startup.
But yes, there was a service for Dell wireless that I just changed the
startup type to manual, and stopped the service.

What were the steps you took to change the startup type to manual and
stop the Dell service??
I have a Dell VOSTRO 1510 that won't connect to my Netgear WGT624 router...
My old Micron GX3 laptop wireless connects just fine..

You can do both in Services. In there you'll see the Wireless Zero config
service, and the Dell service.
Not sure if you know how to do that, but if not;
1.) right-click on My Computer and choose Properties
2.) Look for Services on the left
3.) In Services, look on the right for the Dell and WZC service
4.) Double-click on a service to change it's properties; the startup type,
and you can stop it there.

JohnB - I would like to enable the WZC Service. I tried to find the Services
tab in My Computer, , but when I right-click on My Computer and select
Properties, the only tabs I get are "General" and "Shortcut". Is there
another way to access Services? Or am I somehow doing something wrong? Your
instructions seem pretty straightforward....

You are probably right-clicking on a shortcut to "My Computer"
instead of the real thing.

Instead, try the following:

Start - Run - "services.msc"

If you have your wireless setup configured through your wireless
adapter/card, open it and there is likely an option to use the XP Wireless
Zero Config. (at least that showed on my Airlink USB Wireless Adapter)
Sometimes, right clicking on the Wireless icon (in the System Tray) will
give the option to use WZC on its menu, if it's disabled.
