Default noob Android Windows Gmail calendar

I don't normally do calendaring but I'm just forgetting too much lately.
So I have to do something on both the Windows desktop & Android phone.

Most of my appointments are personal and are set up in email or by phone.
I read email on a windows desktop using the default Edge web browser.

I text and do phone calls on the phone but don't use any calendars yet.
Any good calendar on Android should work since I don't use any yet.

What's good for setting up appointments on both windows/android calendars?

I use rainlendar2. There is a free version but you have to pay a small
fee to get the pro version that interfaces to Google Calendar. I think
it's great. It displays on the screen your events, if you wish, and
will interface to multiple G. Calendars. My wife and I use it on 2
laptops to keep our joint calendars visible as well as on the phone.

Thunderbird has a calendar and will interface to G.Calendar too.

Before considering other suggestions(like installing additional email
software to connect to a calendar.....)

How about providing more info.
Since your are using Edge, you are also using Windows 10.

Does reading email in Edge indicate 'reading mail in the Google Mail web
interface' or 'reading email in the Outlook.com web interface' or 'reading
mail in another mail provider web interface e.g. your isp'?

Is your email account setup on your Android phone?

Fyi...if your email account is a Gmail account, Google Calendar can be setup
in Windows 10 Calendar app.(Note: You need a Gmail account for Google Calendar).

I struggled with this for a long time, but there are two very good
options.

If you use Outlook (the office program) then the (inexpensive) utility
gSyncit does an excellent job of synchronising Outlook (Calendar and
Contacts) with your Google account, and the Google Android Calendar app
is sufficient for most needs.

If you don't use Outlook for calendar, try the Windows 10 built-in Mail
program. You can easily configure it to synchronise with your Google
calendar and it works seamlessly.

I use Outlook on my main desktop, but use Mail on laptop and tablet, so
I always have my Calendar and contacts handy.

Even though I do use Gmail I prefer not to use Google Calendar.

I have installed Rainlendar2 on Windows.

Maybe Rainlendar can output a file format to Android that Android can read?

Thunderbird has a calendar and will interface to G.Calendar too.

I was hoping there is a Google-free solution between Android & Windows.

It was all automatically set up in Edge so I don't know how to tell.

Is your email account setup on your Android phone?

Yes. It uses the K9 app. But I almost never use email on Android.
Except in dire emergencies.

I need mail on Windows.
I need calendaring on both Windows & Android but mostly Android.

I'd rather not use Google if I don't have to.

I hate that all the solutions require Google.

Can't there be a Windows/Android calendar solution outside of Google?

Both thunderbird and Rainlendar2 the free version will interface to .ics
files. Ical files. Now if you can find a program for android that
reads Ical, but you'd have to move it from windows to phone to update
since they only work on local files.

That's why I like going through Google Calendar as it does the sharing
for me.

Well... your "Subject" mentions "Gmail calendar", and that is the Google
calendar. It is simply the easiest one. Use Google Calendar on the
phone, and it syncs instantly with any other tablet or computer you
have, in all directions. It can share appointments with other people, or
send them via gmail.

For example, Thunderbird has a calendar addon that interfaces to google
calendar, and works on both Windows and Linux (plus the google site on a
web browser). And someone mentioned another native W10 tool that does it.

If you do not want to use Google, then you need a service on Internet
that does the syncing, and corresponding apps. There are enterprise
solutions that are private, internal to the enterprise network, should
be safe. But I'm not familiar with them.

I would repeat your post asking in the tittle for a non google
calendaring solution, hopefully cloud based.

Then there are non-cloud solutions. Maybe using your own server for
sharing, or transferring a file on the appropriate direction, manually,
each time.

Surely Microsoft-Windows has its own calendaring service, hopefully with
a calendar app for phones. But then you have to trust Microsoft more
than you do Google :-p

If you use outlook then just use the outlook calendar on windows and via
the android outlook app. No need to sync via Google calendar.

Interesting comment. I realise that I've been using Outlook with Gmail
(via gSyncit) for so long I've just about forgotten why I settled on
that combination. My calendar and contacts have always (for two
decades!) been primarily in Outlook (a local .ost file) , so everything
else is secondary.

I think the reason I started using Google calendar was to have my
calendar available on my Android mobile at a time before Outlook for
Android was available (Microsoft bought the original Accompli client, I
learned today, and branded it as "Outlook mobile" in 2015.) When I
tried it (some time later than that), I found that the calendar was then
read-only. I first bought gSyncit in early 2013.

Of course, for desktop Outlook to sync with Android Outlook there has to
be a cloud connection, and if your calendar and contacts are in a local
..ost file (as mine still are, though now synced with Gmail) then you'll
need a service to sync through. If you use Hotmail (now confusingly
branded Outlook of course) then it'll just work seamlessly. I see the
Android client on my mobile has my calendar (now read-write) synced via
Gmail, so that's easy enough. But if you use an email service like
btinternet, which doesn't provide a calendar, then you won't get
syncing.

I'm probably a dinosaur (I remember using punched cards!) and I guess
basing your personal data primarily on local files is pretty much old-
school. If you use one of the major cloud services (hotmail, gmail)
then you'll likely find more problems are already solved for you.

Yep. I used to have a rather convoluted system via thunderbird + lightning
+ gcal plugin to access my Google calendar and a manual import to outlook.

Now I use outlook and office365 for work, and Google calendar for
everything else. It's just easier to embrace the cloud

I've used tkremind since 1994. It's my diary. I don't see how I can
convert the data to something more modern without a lot of typing. I
keep future appointments in Jorte so I can see them on my phone as a
practical matter, but I don' t really like the format. And I have a
paper pocket calendar too.

It's Linux, everything is possible!
https://www.roaringpenguin.com/wiki/...Remind_Helpers

With the above you can export to iCal which can imported into any calendar.

The biggest limitations with paper calendars (for me) are recurring events
and events occurring beyond the timescale of the current calendar (e.g an
appointment received in September for the next February and you haven't
bought next year's calendar yet).
