Replacing the old winhlp32.exe file?
I have several ancient but still useful programs whose Help file does
not work.(It opens the top level Microsoft Support page!) I understand from this post https://www.tenforums.com/general-su...dows-10-a.html that the fix requires replacing the existing winhlp32.exe file by a new one, which I've downloaded. But Win 10 requires permissions to be changed from 'TrustedInstaller' to achieve that. This article explains how: https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/w...stedinstaller/ I'm trying to do so, but fail at the step shown he https://www.dropbox.com/s/bghtvllj8h...LP-1.jpg?raw=1 This is what mine displays: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4zilyt1qwk...LP-2.jpg?raw=1 How do others overcome this problem please? Or is the consensus to leave those permissions alone and instead use some second best method, such as converting the HLP file to CHM. Or even just using a PDF user guide if there is one. Look just above the tabs. The owner is between the tabs and the title bar. Next to the owner is a blue link "change". You click that link to "take ownership, i.e. to change ownership to whichever account you want to have "take" the ownership. For replacing winhlp32.exe you would take ownership of the winhlp32.exe file, not the system32 folder. The winhlp32.exe file is also in C:\Windows, not system32. Or is the consensus to leave those permissions alone and instead use some second best method, such as converting the HLP file to CHM. AFAIK you will not find an easy tool for converting HLP to CHM. Or even just using a PDF user guide if there is one. If you set the Windows associations to associate *.hlp files with another program which can read them [1], you will be able to double-click the *.hlp file and read it. This method does not let the XYZ program's "Help" menu open the XYZ.hlp file, because the "Help" function does not use file associations. [1] Such as a fully functional winhlp32.exe file Terry, East Grinstead, UK -- Kind regards Ralph |

[1] Such as a fully functional winhlp32.exe file Terry, East Grinstead, UK Excellent, thanks Ralph. Success followed, albeit after several failed choices of 'Object' and/or 'Name' and difficulties with the subsequent steps to apply Full Control. I have not applied any association to HLP files. Clicking the Help menu now does what it always did 20 years ago: brings up a Help menu. Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

I see its exceptionally large repertoire, but I'd have been surprised as well as impressed if it could read HLP files too. https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/doc...t-formats.html SumatraPDF reader supports the following document types: PDF (.pdf) eBook formats: unencrypted EPUB (.epub) MOBI (.mobi) Fiction Wise (.fb2, .fb2z, .zfb2) ..pdb (Palm DOC format) ..tcr comic book files: .cbz, .cbr, .cbt, .cb7z DjVu (.djv, .djvu) Microsoft Compiled HTML Html (.chm) XPS (.xps) Images (.tga, .gif, .jpg, .j2k, .png, .webp, .tiff) Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

But if/when I encounter another file that demands 'TrustedInstaller' permission then I'll try that interesting PowerRun tool. Terry, East Grinstead, UK |
