No Upgrade install option on new XP Prof OEM?
Greetings,
I just upgraded my old home PC (Athlon2000 etc.) I bought a new Windows XP Professional OEM pack (version 2002 including SP1) The old PC is FAT16 Win95 - I upgraded that to Win98SE temporarily, then converted to FAT32. BUT - then when I then try to install the new WinXP from Win98 I DON'T see any Upgrade Install option (just the New Installation). So, Anyone know WHY there is no "Upgrade" Install? For a test, I inserted the new XP CD into my work PC (with a Corporate XP version) and I saw an error "This version cannot be upgraded, no Upgrade install option will be available" - so it sure seems this CD CAN support an Upgrade install. (I know I can probably use the File and Settings Transfer wizard if necessary, but the Upgrade is a much better method I think). The little green manual says nothing about Upgrade Installation either. I did a search around, could not seem to find any quick answer - Please, could someone help me with doing this UPGRADE from Win98 to WinXP thanks... QuentinJ |

No Upgrade install option on new XP Prof OEM?
Typically, OEM operating systems only install on computers made by that OEM.

No Upgrade install option on new XP Prof OEM?
Hi Quentin,
OEM versions generally cannot be used to upgrade an existing = installation, they are designed for clean installs only. The error = message you saw in the machine at work is typical of this. If you want = to test it (you'll get the same message), boot from a startup floppy and = run winnt.exe from the I386 folder on the CD. --=20 Best of Luck, Rick Rogers aka "Nutcase" MS-MVP - Win9x http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Associate Expert - WinXP - Expert Zone www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone Win98 Help - www.rickrogers.org "Quentin David Jones" wrote in message = ... No Upgrade install option on new XP Prof OEM?
Yes you ran into the limitation (perhaps the only one that is important) of
the OEM. OEM is normally sold with a NEW computer, so there is no reason to have the UPGRADE capability. That is why it has a lower price. Another limitation is that you dont have Microsoft support, but your support comes from the person who sold you the OEM. But who cares about Microsoft support? The best way to get support is through the web and through this newsgroup which is for everyone and FREE. Want my advice? Let XP do a clean install.... most upgrades leave you with BUGS and trash on the computer that creates some problems later on. I seldom do upgrades. Thanks Rick,
I see. So what I needed was a NON OEM version. Oh well - I'll use the transfer wizard etc. thanks, Quentin "Rick "Nutcase" Rogers" wrote in message ... No Upgrade install option on new XP Prof OEM?
Greetings --
OEM CDs cannot be used to perform upgrades. They are specifically designed to perform only new installations, preferably on empty hard drives. No Upgrade install option on new XP Prof OEM?
.... you want to install XP over 9x...
first words of advice... don't. XP is NT based and 9x is not... both are totally different operating systems... my suggestion, rename your Windows and program files folders, and install fresh, then re-install all of your apps this will make things go _alot_ smoother in the future.. ... Anyone know WHY there is no "Upgrade" Install? You have the OEM version, which you stated. OEM means for new systems only. You would have had to buy an upgrade version if you wanted to upgrade. Installing the OS anew will mean a nice, clean Windows directory too. Bad side is of course that none of your installed programs are installed any more. |
