Hi Paul,
Let's cover the old first. XP is obsolete. It's like a 12 yr old
Oldsmobile. Need parts ? Go find them yourself, service doesn't carry
them anymore.

Yeah but if the 12 year Oldsmobile runs like a top and the only thing
you had to do for the last 12 years is to change the oil and filter and
that is it. Then why bother buying a new one and hope it would be just
as reliable? And maybe you and Microsoft deem XP obsolete. But for
millions of others including myself, it will continue to run reliably
for many years to come.

Always a possibility...but years is a stretch to expect that same
population to continue use....XP in the primary market (6 continents
except China) is approaching the mid to low teen %. China hovers in the
+40 % (legal or otherwise)...so I guess in the future, it will be mostly
you and mainland China.

Especially considering that the "new one" has the steering wheel, gas
and break pedals, engine, trunk, seats and windows in different
places; not for any good reason, but just for the hell of it.

In this case, there is no new one. Can't buy a new Oldsmobile, or for
that matter a new XP....what you can buy is Win7 or Win8 or some other
vehicle.

No, I believe you are sadly mistaken. XP will be around for many years
to come. It is one of the best OS Microsoft ever came out with.
Microsoft doesn't have the talent they once had back then. And it shows
in the newer OS and Microsoft applications. Heck just look at WLM, every
version is very buggy and they never got it right. And Office, they dump
the better features in the newer versions. It is like Microsoft is
trying to destroy themselves from within.

Sure, XP is technically obsolete, in that it can't do many things that
current OSs can do, and security may be a problem the ordinary user
can't solve. But an OS is not a car, it doesn't have parts that wear
out, it just doesn't have parts that other OSs have. But that matters
only if you can't run the software you need, which for most XP users is
not the issue.

The real issue is not that Win8 is technically superior to XP. It's
that interface. It turns people off.

So what's wrong with Metro/Modern? It's intended for a portable PC, i.e,
what a tablet is supposed to be: A super-tablet that can be adapted to
many different uses and work/play contexts, with and without attached
devices. For such a machine, switching between interfaces must be
smooth, seamless, and above all very, very easy. What's more, touch and
mouse gestures must work exactly the same on any interface. Metro/Modern
doesn't deliver, which is why there are 3rd party add-ons to make some
of this possible.

For any device or object that requires user interaction, interface
design is the single most important problem.

FWIW, I bought a Surface Pro 2, and like it very much. I just got the
dock, and am still waiting for the Touch Cover. It seems MS
underestimated the demand for this add-on, IMO should have been included
with the tablet. There's other goodies. I expect this desktop to become
mainly the network hub for the external drives attached to it, a kind of
poor man's NAS system.

AND everyone is supposed to rush out and buy a new touchscreen
monitor.......gotta to get the economy going.........

Are the windows cars supposed to be updated remotely or are the
ford dealers supposed to do the updating? Or perhaps the console
controls an imbeded system?

The best would be Win 7 followed by Win 8. XP is flawed, crashes
frequently with the message, "send report to Microsoft?". Compared to 7
and 8, its Fischer Price interface is ugly. It needs constant defrgging
and now is wide open for attacks. Course, you use old versions of T-Bird
and XP because you erroneously think that you know more than Mozilla and
Microsoft. What's worse, you advise others to do the same.

Very nice unit, the sweet spot is the 128GB model. Many are
disappointed about the back-order/availability status...some even
suggesting it's planned to favor the pricing premium.

I wonder if banks, building societies and online vendors will start
setting their websites to refuse connections from XP machines, on the
gounds of security? That could have an effect.

I would have went with the ASUS Transformer Book before a Surface Pro 2
myself.

Lol. WLM, every version...save a few updates to the integrated suite of
products for compatibility of Photo Gallery, Movie Maker and One
Drive...WLM is the same for the last 7 versions.

A new one (16.4.3528.0031 aka QFE4) is available now.

They haven't done it for other unsupported older Windows versions yet.
So it would be odd that they would start with XP.

XP is probably the most popular PC operating system of all time, and
the end of its support by Microsoft has had an unusual amount of
publicity. Everybody knows there's some sort of security issue, even
if they don't all know what it is.

You only have to worry about IE and it won't affect other browsers which
still gets security updates.

And yet they remain stupid and still can't fix the quoting bug.
Microsoft programmers just seem to get dumber and dumber as time
continues on.
