Yeah but if the 12 year Oldsmobile runs like a top and the only thing you had to do for the last 12 years is to change the oil and filter and that is it. Then why bother buying a new one and hope it would be just as reliable? And maybe you and Microsoft deem XP obsolete. But for millions of others including myself, it will continue to run reliably for many years to come. Always a possibility...but years is a stretch to expect that same population to continue use....XP in the primary market (6 continents except China) is approaching the mid to low teen %. China hovers in the +40 % (legal or otherwise)...so I guess in the future, it will be mostly you and mainland China. -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

It is one of the best OS Microsoft ever came out with. Microsoft doesn't have the talent they once had back then. And it shows in the newer OS and Microsoft applications. Heck just look at WLM, every version is very buggy and they never got it right. And Office, they dump the better features in the newer versions. Sure, XP is technically obsolete, in that it can't do many things that current OSs can do, and security may be a problem the ordinary user can't solve. But an OS is not a car, it doesn't have parts that wear out, it just doesn't have parts that other OSs have. But that matters only if you can't run the software you need, which for most XP users is not the issue. The real issue is not that Win8 is technically superior to XP. It's that interface. It turns people off. So what's wrong with Metro/Modern? It's intended for a portable PC, i.e, what a tablet is supposed to be: A super-tablet that can be adapted to many different uses and work/play contexts, with and without attached devices. For such a machine, switching between interfaces must be smooth, seamless, and above all very, very easy. What's more, touch and mouse gestures must work exactly the same on any interface. Metro/Modern doesn't deliver, which is why there are 3rd party add-ons to make some of this possible. For any device or object that requires user interaction, interface design is the single most important problem. FWIW, I bought a Surface Pro 2, and like it very much. I just got the dock, and am still waiting for the Touch Cover. It seems MS underestimated the demand for this add-on, IMO should have been included with the tablet. There's other goodies. I expect this desktop to become mainly the network hub for the external drives attached to it, a kind of poor man's NAS system. AND everyone is supposed to rush out and buy a new touchscreen monitor.......gotta to get the economy going......... |

XP is flawed, crashes frequently with the message, "send report to Microsoft?". Compared to 7 and 8, its Fischer Price interface is ugly. It needs constant defrgging and now is wide open for attacks. Course, you use old versions of T-Bird and XP because you erroneously think that you know more than Mozilla and Microsoft. What's worse, you advise others to do the same. -- Blue |
