OK , I updated to the latest version. My wife has a number of window
games she likes to play (Solitaire, Dominoes, Harts, Blackjack, etc.)
all from the Microsoft store. Now when she clicks on apps from the
desktop start button (I use Classic Start - have since Windows 8) and
selects a game the open screen of the game appears and then the display
immediately returns to the desk top. The only one that will actually
play is Dominoes.

Any thoughts why this occurs.

Because you've a Taskbar Properties option selected.

Go to taskbar properties and uncheck:
1- "Show Windows Store apps on taskbar" (Taskbar tab)
2- "Go to desktop instead of Start when I start session or close every app
in one screen" (Navigation tab)

I did that. Now when I click on an app it simply goes to the metro
screen - does not activate the game.

Sorry, I understood when you close an app, windows returns to desktop.

Welcome to Win8.

The is a guess.

I have several MS games. Each time they open they try to go online and
access the MS account. Do you have an MS accout?

No, another one of my problems. When I attempted some time ago to
establish a MS account it failed because it said my credit card was
invalid. Of course I use the card daily, here and on-line with no
problem. I was trying to buy a tablet from the Microsoft store when
this happened. I immediately went to Amazon and bought the same tablet
using the card. I have tried creating the account several time since
and still will not accept the card. Says the Bank refuses to accept the
card. Called the Bank - no problem.

I just spent about a half an hour as a results of trying to respond to
your post.

Bottom line I did not have to enter a credit card number to get an
account with MS, as MS did not need it to down load a free game or and
upgrade.

In trying to answer your post, I got kicked out of my local account
which does not require going to the MS store. I was trying to access
the MS store, to better explain what I did. I got in but as I said I
changed me into the MS account. I spent a half an hour trying to get
back to the local account. I am sorry I can give you no other
information.

But I do "Love" MS Metro system for Windows 8
