SSD as C:
I'm thinking of installing an SSD as drive C: on my Win 8.1 desktop as a
replacement for the 1TB regular HD that's there now. I have 800GB free on that drive so a 240GB SSD would seem to be adequate, but I'm thinking I'd like to move the C:\users\cy\documents to a second internal drive. Is there a way to mount that new directory (say it's called E:\documents) to c:\users\cy\documents so that clicking on documents in Win Explorer (looking at This PC OS (C Users Cy) will take me to E:\documents? Thanks. |

What I did was to include (in my case) D:\documents in the documents library and then arrange for it to list that first. David -- David Rance writing from Caversham, Reading, UK |

Yes, from Disk Management you can mount the entire E drive into an empty NTFS folder on your C drive if you want everything to be transparent, or you could use a Junction Point to mostly do the same thing. Others have already provided other solutions. |

That's why I asked for help. If I thought I could suss out what to do with the results of such searches, I probably wouldn't have asked for help here. "Disk Management" Too general. "Change Drive Letters and Paths" Not ware that that was what I was trying to do! "Folder Mount" Hmmmm... This looks promising! http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753321.aspx |

Is there a way to mount that new directory (say it's called E:\documents) to c:\users\cy\documents so that clicking on documents in Win Explorer (looking at This PC OS (C Users Cy) will take me to E:\documents? It sounds like you want to do what I did. :-) I built a new unit with an SSD solely as the drive for the operating system, and ALL data except for the library files (the indexes if you will) are on a 2nd mechanical drive. The only reason I didn't move the library files is I've yet to find a way to tell Windows to store those files elsewhere. And if you don't use libraries, it won't matter since the content of these files will always be same as when the OS was installed. I have a 120 GB SSD, with 3 partitions. One partition is Win 7, one partition is Win 8, and the third is as yet unused. I put virtual memory on the 2nd drive also, but if I never use that 3rd partition of the SSD, I may move virtual memory to the unused partition of the SSD. Since the boot partitions contain only OS files, size is essentially stable. And so far, no problems with just a 120 GB SSD. I have never, ever, stored my data on the C:\ partition, even on single drive systems I create a "D" drive for data. MS has even admitted that having the data and the OS files on the same partition/drive may not be the best idea for everyone. I've never used the My Documents system, it doesn't match how I want my data on the hard drive sorted. And it feels like an extra and unnecessary step to me. It may not be, I've never really looked into it. Nixon's suggestion as to how to move your data is certainly the easiest, from my point of view. I haven't relocated my files for Win 8 as of yet, but I suspect there are more folders that can be relocated that is shown in Windows Explorer. I'm 99.9% sure there are more folders in Win 7 you can move, but I didn't go take a look before writing this reply. And if Win 8 works the same as Win 7, changing the location from C:\ to ?:/ will give you the option of having Windows move all your data for you. -- Ken Mac OS X 10.8.5 Firefox 33.1 Thunderbird 31.0 "My brain is like lightning, a quick flash and it's gone!" |
