Default Windows Temp Folder

My Windows 8.1 Temp Folder:

C:\Windows\Temp

Has almost 2Gb of stuff in it, mostly subfolders and files with names like

{BEBEE34D-84A2-4EDD-8BEA-96CC54371263}

Can I clear out the Temp folder? Are these files really temporary files or
something that's needed? When I run Disk Cleanup, "Temporary Files" is not
checked. Should I check it and will this clean up all these files and folders? I
know I can try it, but i don't want to screw anything up. Also what about "Setup
Log Files". Can I safely check that box in Windows Cleanup?

As always, thanks.

Okay, I downloaded and ran CCleaner, which a while back I was told was useless
on Windows 8. Well, lo and behold. It cleaned out that folder. I guess it's not
as useless as Microsoft said it was. Thanks.

You can solve some problems with Takeown.

Takeown in a script. To show the commands used.

Takeown added to right-click context menu. These are .reg
files that you right-click and select "merge". The first
installs Takeown, the second removes it if you don't want it.

Who told you it was useless? As far as I'm concerned, it's very
useful. Only one aspect of it is useless--or worse, dangerous--its
registry cleaner. Its registry cleaner is safer than most other
registry cleaners, but it's still dangerous, and using any registry
cleaner is unnecessary.

And where it proved dangerous to me was that I didn't pay atttention to what it
was going to clean, and it apprently went to town on cookies or something such
thast a message board I go to daily and when I read a post the post turns dark,
it cleaned them all out so I don't know what I did and didn't read now. My own
damn fault but it still ****es me off. As to who told me to get rid of it, that
would have been a Microsoft support person a few months ago when an update
screwed me over royally and I had to call them. To their credit, they spent
about an hour on the phine with me, no charge, took over my computer and
recommended I get rid of all superfluous "maintenance" programs, and CCleaner
was one.

Most likely, someone here would have helped you, also at no charge, and it
probably wouldn't have involved uninstalling useful non-MS programs.

Unfortunately, Microsoft support is not a great place to go for
support. Many of those people are very poor.

Believe me, this is the FIRST place I go to for help. I forget what exactly the
issue was, but it involved the installation of a Windows update. Whatever help I
was getting here, the problem just kep coming back, so in desperation, I called
Microsoft. I was surprised they still offered help by phone, even more suprised
that I didn't get placed on hold for an hour before someone came on line (It was
like the tech guy answered the phone himself) and I was the the most surprised
that it didn't cost me anything. And they gave me a case number in case I had to
call back. But yeah, I could tell the guy wasn't in Chicago or Omaha or Seattle.
Twleve times zones away no doubt. But he fixed the main problem. It was just as
he was going through my system from afar that he recommended I dump several
utilities that I was using. As they say in Greece, C'est la vie.
