SvcHost.exe (NetSvcs) using up tons of RAM
Here's a screen cap of my Resource Monitor screen on my laptop with Win
7 64-bit HomePrem: http://i.imgur.com/W1z9r1W.jpg As you can see SvcHost.exe (Netsvcs) is using over 2.2 GB in the Commit memory and over 1.5 GB in Working Set memory. And there at least 3 other processes over 250 MB, combining with it to use up about 70% of the 8 GB of RAM on this laptop. What could be causing this much memory to be used, mainly by Netsvcs? Yousuf Khan As administrator, you can put wuauserv (part of Windows Update) into its own svchost. Then, when it goes nuts, there is only the one service inside that SVCHOST and you know for sure it is the root cause. sc config wuauserv type= own ******* You can apply this update. It reduces RAM consumption by wuauserv. But, it does not fix the root cause, which is unbounded CPU usage during "supersedes calculations". You might find one core of the CPU is busy for half an hour. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3050265 The same wuauserv problem existed on WinXP as well. Microsoft just doesn't want to fix it. On Windows 7, you can try installing "the highest version of Internet Explorer", followed by "cumulative update for IE for the month of September". In other words, patch IE as high as it will go. That will reduce the CPU consumption when Windows Update runs. Instead of half an hour, it might run for ten minutes instead. Paul |

To see what processes have been rolled into an instance of svchost.exe, use SysInternals' Process Explorer. Right-click on a svchost.exe, select Properties, look under Services tab. Alternatively, for a terse list, just hover the mouse over a svchost.exe process to see the popup that lists the mashed together services. Might clue the culprit service. |
