Yes, it's true. WD in Win8/8.1 is basically a rebranded Microsoft Security
Essentials. Surely you didn't expect them to come up with a unique new name,
did you? At least they didn't name it Microsoft Outlook Security. eg

Oops! I didn't think to look. :-(

"In Windows 8, Microsoft upgraded Windows Defender into an antivirus
program comparable to Microsoft Security Essentials.[11] This new
Windows Defender greatly resembles Microsoft Security Essentials and
uses the same virus definition updates."

Thank you, Bruce. :-)

I'm ashamed to admit I've become a little out-of-date since converting
to Apple OS X for my main computing back in 2008!

Will this in-built anti-virus facility also be included in Windows 10?

Of course.

BTW, it's better to think of it as "anti-malware", since it defends
against all kinds of stuff that can compromise your system. But you, the
user, are still the most serious security risk.

I accept that comment in the spirit in which you write it, but there's
NO protection from a zero-day drive-by download - is there?!!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive-by_download

"Hackers use different techniques to obfuscate the malicious code, so
that antivirus software is unable to recognize it. The code is executed
in hidden iframes, and can go undetected".

Apple includes similar defences in OS-X, it just doesn't draw attention
to that fact. Has done it that way from the very beginning. Most updates
to your current OS-X are to patch security holes.

I appreciate you comments. Thank you Wolf K.

There must be some subtle differences though - as Malwarebytes (MBAM)
has so far been unable to come up with a version which will work on OS X!

Have a good day,

You too! :-)

Apparently MBAM doesn't do very much to protect their trademark.

Page title: MalwareBytes for Mac: Download Mac Antivirus & Antimalware
App - http://www.malwarebytesmac.org/

Also, Malwarebytes MBAM doesn't even get the top hit on google's search
engine anymore, that 'title' goes the MS's BitLocker

"Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM) provides
enterprise management capabilities for BitLocker and BitLocker To Go."

That's a non-specific uninformative link.

How about https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3691 Do not install
MacKeeper

It is very true. Your memory is letting you down and this could be the
first sign of chronologically getting old but mentally not improving at all.

What you snipped is important relative to what I said:

At the time I posted this message

http://al.howardknight.net/msgid.cgi?ID=144199576400

about the site Page title: MalwareBytes for Mac: Download Mac Antivirus
& Antimalware App - http://www.malwarebytesmac.org/

MBAM didn't have such a Mac product. In 2014, another negative article
was written about MacKeeper re the malwarebytesmac.org site.

http://www.thesafemac.com/ongoing-mackeeper-fraud/ Ongoing MacKeeper
fraud - Published November 2nd, 2014

Since then, the scamadviser has this credibility info to say about the site:

http://www.scamadviser.com/check-web...rebytesmac.org

Just in case you were as yet unaware, Mike:

That's nice; altho' all this, mine included, seems quite off-topic for a
Win7 group.

Not important in the whole scheme of things, Mike! :-)

I do have Windows7 on a laptop (so I qualify! .... that's a joke!).
I expect other folk use different operating systems too.
