Default Icon not changing

I made an icon using Greenfish Icon Editor for a shortcut on my desktop.
I called the icon whatever.ico
Great, and now the shortcut works...

But I find that I don't like the icon so I recreated it. Different image but same name.

However even though I went back to the shortcut and re-picked that icon, and it shows right on the pick, it does not
show right on the desktop. Still shows the same old icon.
I tried changing it to another icon for a minute and then back. Still old icon.

If I look at the icon in any viewer it looks proper, but some cache in windows is not changing.

I think I've cleared any icon caches I have, I ran ccleaner and wiped the explorer icon cache, deleted thumbs.db a few
places.

Anyone got any ideas what is caching? I've rebooted many times too.

Maybe this has some other information.

Good idea but didn't work. It did fix it in my icon folder. The icon there still showed the wrong pic. Now that
that is fixed, I tried it all over again and still no go. I decided on a different Icon and that works. Later on
some day I'll go back maybe. It's not the biggest issue in life.
Thanks.

Dang if the latest reboot didn't change the icon. I rebooted to bring up my linux system and after playing there for a
while booted back to win8. And now the icon has changed. Maybe it takes 4 reboots and not 3 :-)

Don't ask, but on odd occasions I have found a complete shut down and
power back on to be better than a restart.

Restart keeps and reuses current operational data, that includes current/in
use registry keys, for example. Shutdown flushes it. That's why shut down
often fixes a problem.

Have a good day,

Ah, another little nugget of information, thanks.

I believe the icon is included in the shortcut file.

Try this:
change the icon to something else, close the Properties window, check to see that the icon has changed, then change it
back to whatever.ico, you should now see the new whatever.ico.

HTH

Tried, but the power fail/reboot seemed to do the trick. I'm a happy camper now.
