Default Unable to Access ebay account.

Not very techy so bear with me :-) My browser is I.E.

1.most times I try to get into a/c I am returned to the sign-in page
2. some times the sign-in page will state (in red) your email user ID or
password is incorrect
3. I've changed my password but still getting 1. and 2.
4. Ebay help chatline have suggested I change to Chrome or Firefox.
Reluctant to do this - if IE was the problem, then Ebay Help would be
flooded with posts.
5. They've suggested I 'clear cache and cookies'. I've followed the
following link but left "delete browsing history on exit"
http://agsci.psu.edu/it/how-to/clear...-history-cache
Still no joy.
6. Last W7 update was on the 9th Sept. In desperation I restored to 8th Sept
but still no luck.

On two occasions I managed to get into my ebay account but to navigate
within menus (watch list, purchase history, messages etc) I was forced to
use the refresh button in browser or F5.

I've run MS security essentials and MyturboPC but no nasties detected. Any
help would be appreciated, thanks.

I'd say it's worth a shot - just to see if it makes a difference, and if
so it might provide clues to get IE working for you - not to say you
must permanently switch browser.

Have you considered a full 'Reset' of Internet Explorer?

Good luck! :-)

Thanks Andy, may try this as a last resort. Is it easy to un-install Chrome
or Firefox?

It probably is, but I'd advise for you to have a backup browser to use in
case your primary one fails. If, for example, your Internet Explorer
executable file becomes corrupt, you would be left with no way to get to
the WWW at all. I'd recommend Firefox.

You wouldn't *have* to use it, you know...

Do you have more than one computer, smart phone or tablet using the same
Internet connection in your home?

Does this problem happen on all of the devices?

Update, I've gone back into Internet options/Privacy and moved slider to
'Accept all cookies' hoping this may please ebay but still no joy.

Answering your question - yes were on b/band and wife also has computer and
her own ebay addy. She uses it exclusively for work and uses ebay, amazon,
google and yahoo - that's about it. She last used ebay about a week ago and
hasn't complained of probs

We need to determine if the DNS servers being used by your computer or
in-home network are correct and safe.

Do you know how to access a command prompt in Windows 7? Are you
comfortable typing in a few command so we
can do a few tests?

Also, do you know how to access the administrative interface of your
in-home router?

Stormy, how's it goin? While yer in helpful mode, just a few quick questions

1. What's the weather like in Bombay?

2. Any progress with my 1m rupee investment in Gold Pyramid Pro unLtd. Just

Thank you all for your patience. There is a fix - well sort of :-) It's a
bit convoluted
and there's a couple of extra steps but I can now get into my account, my
ebay etc and
navigate the various menus. It sounds like the problem is either cookies
or the recent
Win7 update.

Go into ebay site and sign in
Enter user ID and password
click sign in (again)
get the usual red message 'password etc incorrect'
type in verification code numbers
sign in (again)
takes me back to sign in screen which already shows User ID and password
in dots ............
ignore and click on google
type ebay. Enter ebay and you're greeted with words "Hello John". I can
now navigate
around My Ebay - no probs.

Painful yes but a step in the right direction. Incidentally I downloaded
firefox and
there's no shortcut to the above 9 I.E. steps.

Are you POSITIVE that the first few attempts were not phishing sites?
And that the real ebay is not going through a phishing proxy?

I don't know the answer to that Paul. The following is the ebay site I use
:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/?rvr_id=265087...&tt_encode=raw

I've saved a shortcut to desktop which avoids the use of google. So now only
8 steps :-)

Using a packet sniffer like Wireshark, you can track
where the packets are really going.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireshark

When you use that, go to View : Name Resolution, and turn
on all four of the bottom items in the list. That's so IP addresses
are translated to symbolic values if possible. That makes it
easier to read the trace.

Wireshark consists of two parts. WinPCap connects to the NIC and
gets the packets for the program. (On modern OSes, sometimes you
need to "Run as Administrator", so WinPCap can access the NIC.)
Whereas Wireshark is the "analysis portion". The designers of
Wireshark, just use the WinPCAP program, to provide access
to the NIC on the Windows platform. They'll use something else
on Linux or FreeBSD (as WinPCAP would be useless there).

The program is fairly complicated, and I haven't really tried out
all the options in there. But for any "conversations" on the
Internet which aren't encrypted, it can tell you a lot. For example,
at one time, if I forgot some password details, I could use
Wireshark to capture the outgoing packet from the setup software,
and learn the password again. (Some protocols send passwords
in plaintext, and you can actually see them in the packet
trace. Just like the staff at your ISP could.)

For encrypted conversations, you may not be able to make
any sense out of the payloads, but even the IP addresses
are better than nothing. If you suspect phishing or DNS poisoning
or proxy monkey business. Just getting an overview of what
is going on, is still useful.

Why not simply go here?

You could use a portable version.

FWIW, I started having lots of trouble with IE a few updates ago. I got so
fed up I switched to Chrome rather reluctantly. Problems are solved, and
after a bit of tweaking and a few extensions, Chrome isn't half bad.

You are most welcome! :-)

Out of interest, DID you reset IE as I suggested earlier today?

Something not quite right about J.W. Compton. Appears to be a
nym-shifting, sock puppet. Possibly ~BD~ in disguise. He is rather
infamous for such behavior.
