No videos on Youtube
I'm running Firefox 61.0.2 64-bits on Win10. For the last week or so,
I can't see any videos on Youtube. The page appears, but there's nothing at the top where the video should be. There's the header and search bar at the top of the page, but the next thing is the title of the video and the bar with thumbs up, thumbs down, Share, Save to, and .... buttons. What would cause that? I haven't made any changes since I could see the videos. FWIW: I just tried ir in Edge, and it works fine. What??? -- Tim Slattery tim at risingdove dot com |

What would cause that? I haven't made any changes since I could see the videos. FWIW: I just tried ir in Edge, and it works fine. What??? I don't have a clue but I tested it on Quantum & it works for me (61.0.2). If it works for you on Edge I would think it's your Firefox setup. Does it work if you reset the Firefox 61 to original default settings? Does it work for you in a Firefox-like browser? What's the most similar browser to Firefox anyway? Is it Waterfox? https://waterfoxproject.org/en-US/ Iceweasel? https://sourceforge.net/projects/iw4win/ Palemoon? http://www.palemoon.org/ SeaMonkey? https://www.seamonkey-project.org/ IceCat? http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/ If it doesn't work for those also, then it could be something in Mozilla. There's a set of newsgroups for Mozilla support somewhere. I think they're something like mozilla.general or mozilla.support.firefox Guessing the serverit would likely be something like news.mozilla.org:119 Great luck! |

Adblockers use block lists that they don't write but get from elsewhere, and those get updated, too. That you haven't changed anything doesn't stop Firefox, adblockers, block lists, and other extensions from updating, or even Windows from updating. New code = fix some old problems + introduce new problems. Have you purged all locally cached data for Firefox? Have you tried loading Firefox in its safe mode and retest? Have you tried temporarily disabling your anti-virus and retest? |

My main browser started crashing, soon after usage on *any* main site. To me, it suggests some script, maybe GoogleAdwords or similar rubbish, is tipping things over. I checked and updated Flash, cleaned caches, and still with the crashing. I think this was done on purpose. That browser was also using FlashBlock, which allows selective control. Even the Adobe Flash test page wasn't showing the current flash version properly. (Whether up to date or not.) http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/about/ ******* You can try this page, and see whether your browser appears or claims to be "buzzword compliant". There used to be a selector for video preference, but that's been removed. https://www.youtube.com/html5 This is an example of what the page looks like. https://s33.postimg.cc/55fkuperj/youtube_html5_page.gif I don't think I've managed to watch a video in the last week, as a result of these "improvements". Perhaps, do a search to see if there are any newsgroups for Firefox. Have you tried Mozilla website to see if they have links for their support sites? I haven't made any changes since I could see the videos. That's wonderful. this should be a plus on your side., We get people who are so anxious that they start changing things and breaking everything and they start blaming Microsoft or Windows 10. FWIW: I just tried ir in Edge, and it works fine. What??? Edge is the de-facto standard these days and people should be using it as their default browser. Mozilla has lost its bearing and it doesn't know what they are doing and where they want to go. You got that right! |

(And videos play on other websites.) I don't have any extensions loaded. Not true. Youtube is now using HTML5 video. You can disable autoplay by going into about:config and changing media.autoplay.enabled from true (the default) to false. If it has changed to false, the user made that change. I don't know if there is an extension that will change this setting (lots of extensions merely change settings in about:config to provide a GUI to those settings rather than drill through the about:config editor). However, the installation of such an extension would still be the choice of the user who wants the behavior or features of that extension. Some sites call play() directly, so this setting has no effect on whether their video autoplays or not. They don't rely on the autoplay attribute. Firefox's setting only affects when autoplay is explicitly specified. As I recall, Youtube is one of those sites. If autoplay is disabled, and if the inbuilt play controls are assumed instead of separate controls coded for the object, the play controls may not be visible, so the user must right-click to select Play. With media.autoplay.enabled = false, what I get in FF 61 is the first frame of the video (which could be black if that's what the video has as its first frame since some authors like to fade into their video) along with a constantly rotating circular icon. Changing this settings does not produce the page layout described by the OP. Although autoplay may be disabled, there is still a placeholder for the space allocated in the code within which the video will play. That the video's placeholder is absent (and apparently the layout is squashed) indicates the OP installed an extensions that strips content out of the page, like an adblocker, Enhancer for Youtube (but configured badly), or something else that blocks resources or modifies the page. You don't have any extensions but we don't know what the OP might have installed. There are programs that operates as local proxies that can modify web content, too, so they affect what you get in a web browser. External proxies can also mishandle content (sometimes deliberately or due to limitations regarding bandwidth). |

I hadn't had any trouble with YouTube, but I've had a minor FireFox issue since upgrading to FireFox 62.0.3 and Windows 1809 (I'm not sure which of those upgrades was responsible). Except for the current tab, all of the other tabs turn black for a while, then turn back to gray. It's not a giant problem, but it's a nuisance. |
