Default empty my cache

When I read columns and articles of the Washington Post, there is almost
always a section for comments. They aren't as stupid as most comments
are.

But lately I can't get the comments section to open, most of the time.

So I wrote them and they wrote back that I should empty my cache.
I've seen the same advice addressed to others for a variety of reasons.

Using firefox.

Isn't the cache the place that stores a list of webpages I've already
been to? I like that because when I google for something, the hits I've
used already are in a different color (and i know to go to one again, or
to avoid them all and look for something better.) So I made my cache a
lot bigger than the default.

If I empty the cache, will all this historical information be gone?

No.

* The cache stores parts of web pages, to speed up revisiting web pages
when those parts do not need to be re-downloaded.

* The cache is not the same as the list of web pages which you have
visited. That is your browsing history.

To see the contents of your cache, enter this in the URL bar:
about:cache?storage=disk

To see your browsing history, use the Firefox menu
History Show All History

In Firefox, press Control+Shift+Delete, expand "Details", and look at
the seven different check-boxes for what can be cleared.

1) "Browsing & Download History" is the one which has the list of
webpages you have already been to. Selecting this to be cleared
is what would make Firefox forget the list of sites you have
been to.

2) "Cache" stores parts of web pages to save them from being
downloaded again.

Increasing your cache size won't increase the browsing history size.

If I empty the cache, will all this historical information be gone?

No, but clearing your "Browsing & Download History" will.

I use Firefox, and find when a page acts up, it's almost always because
of ad ad/malware blocker or security setting/extension. You can try
disabling those or use a different browser (like Chrome or Opera) for
problem sites.

Thanks, Ralph, for your detailed answer. I didn't know about this.

To see your browsing history, use the Firefox menu

Or this. This looks really valuable.

I'm waiting for a good test situation, where I'm sure I can't see the
comments without doiong something extra, to see if emptying the cache
really works.

No, but clearing your "Browsing & Download History" will.

Okay, I won't do that.

I don't have any blocker besides what's built into Firefox.

On one occasion, a webpage insisted I disable it but I didn't know where
to do that!
