Default Latest updates and HP

A friend of my recently purchased an HP laptop and with the latest round
of updates, the machine pretty much ground to a halt.

HP was unable to resolve the issue but since the machine was still
pretty new he returned it for a refund.

He sent me a list of SKU's with known issues and except one model of
Dell all were HP.

I have no more info...anyone here know more?

Did he check HP for updates, using the HP support Assistant? In looking
at a couple of the SKU that were listed on the HP.com there appears to
be a problem with one of the on of the HP vendor for the software of a
subsystem.

Running the HP support Assistant should pick this up and download and
install the corrected version. Usually the people in the Support
department are the last to learn about these problems.

I checked a couple of those, and they seem to be
Kaby Lake processors. 2C 4T.

If you get bored, you could check for a BIOS update for
the platform. See if the release notes for a BIOS update,
hint at Win10-related issues.

Thank you

My guess is that MS simply cannot test their updates on every model of
computer there is.

But you missed it. Loading that update on your friends computer
*was* the test. Consumers are used to test the patches first, before
the patch is released to Enterprise, or before they go to the US Military
(who have the telemetry turned off).

Kaby Lake is like a lot of other Intel processors, but one difference,
is it has a very fast "state change" speed. It might take 100us for
the older processors to do a voltage/multiplier change. Kaby makes
changes like that faster. Microsoft claims they couldn't "fit" whatever
that feature is called, into Windows 7, but were willing to do it for
Windows 10. I'm not convinced anyone would notice if that feature
was disabled.

A lot of the slowness on Win10, is railing the disk drive with the
"incessant scanning of files". If you replace the hard drive with
an SSD, then the CPU becomes the limiting factor. And if you were
hoping that Microsoft would "hurry up with the maintenance", they
seem to have a policy of not using the entire CPU when you would
want them to. Say Windows Defender is scanning the drive. If you had
a four core processor (4C 8T), maybe they use two cores to scan
for malware. Instead of having eight threads of execution, and
finishing the job pretty damn quick.

Actually it was, but it was in response to Good Guy and the comments were
directed to him, not you.
I use WinQuote with my Windows Live Mail 2012 Account and somehow it erased
any reference to him in the reply.
I just tried it again and the same thing happened while using WinQuote.
I then just tried forwarding it and it worked OK.
I will have to be more diligent if I ever reply to one of his posts.

Have fun.

Sheesh, trolling for years and ignored by most must make for a pretty
sad life
