I was receiving the same error message and tried
everything (including sending a 'please help' e-mail -- never received a response). At the time, I was running a trial version of ZoneAlarm (anti-hacking, popup suppression, etc.). The trial period ended, I killed the free version, and - Voila! - the problem disappeared. If you are running a similar program, try suspending its operation and see if you can then sign on.
