Default windows root system 32 file

After several ill fated attempts to install XP on my 98, I gave up only to
find that
"XP startup" remained on my machine, requiring me to decline this option
during initial startup. otherwise it defaults to the XP option and I get put
into a loop.
After finding and removing the offender to the recycle bin, I have now found
that I cannot start my machine without it. A message widows root\system
32\hal.dll message appears telling me to reinstall the file.
This should be easy if only I can get back into my recycle bin.
Help please !!

You write "After finding and removing the offender to the recycle bin...".
What exactly do you mean with this?

Sounds like you deleted the boot.ini file.

Use the Recovery Console and the bootcfg command to rebuild the boot.ini.

The XP didn't load, only the "XP Setup" file ..so upon starting the machine I
came to a page that gave me an option of (1) Start Windows normally, or (2)
Windows XP setup. You then have only a few seconds to choose option (1) as it
defaults to option (2) which puts you into an endless loop.
Because of this annoying problem I found the offending file and sent it to
the recycle.. it was only after I tried to use my computer that I noticed
that the deleted file was required.. I now need to get into my machine and
retrieve it from the bin.
For the second fellow who replied, I am still running 98, not XP !!.
Being totally non computer minded this is beyond my brain capacity.. Do I
need a 98 Boot disc ? will this work ?? The only disc I have is a copy of
the 98SE program.

You still haven't told us what this offending file is. Unless you
do, we are limited to guessing what your problem might be.

I am the second fellow and hal.dll and boot.ini are Windows 2000 or Windows
XP files, they are NOT Windows 98 files. You do not get a hal.dll missing
error with Windows 98, so you probably have a partial install of XP.

You are either missing hal.dll or the boot.ini or possibly both.

Take your machine to a reputable computer shop and get it fixed.

Wesley.

It was a partial install that left me with part of it on my
machine, and trying to remove it ended up with the problem I now have.
If I could only get back into the computer I could simply reinstall the file
from the recycle..Is there any way to start the computer without this file.?
Unfortunately a trip to a shop would be far too expensive, especially as I
have no idea what I am talking about..these fellows are as bad as car
mechanics.
Cheers ..Ken

Kenny,

You need to boot from the XP CD. See this article...

"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you
start your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184

Maybe you want to print it out so you can refer to it as you go.

I had to do this myself a while back when I did something STUPID with my
boot.ini. ;-)

Default windows root system 32 file

Hi guys.

No luck yet..after pressing the "any key to boot from CD" I got a blue
"windows set up" page, and along the bottom of the page.. "Loading files".
After a number of them were apparently loaded, the message changed to "set
up is starting windows".
The page stayed like this for at least 1/2 hour. Assuming it was frozen, I
went thru the whole thing again but unded up in the same position. (I assume
the files wouldn't load the second time around if they had done so on the
first try)
I never got to the "Welcome to set up page".. how long do I have to wait on
the blue screen ? and is by disc OK to boot from ??
I obtained several quotes today for installing the file, and I am looking
at $400 AUS
