I had one of the 'Woz' units with 2MB of RAM that cost me $1100.00 at
the time (that price was for just the RAM). My 20MB hard drive ($600)
was the size of a small paper shredder.Â* I had a modem for 'net
connectivity before there were graphical browsers. I also had a 110 bps
modem on my Apple IIe, as well...Â* along with a Yamaha MIDI card and an
80 column card for display. The IIGS was an odd beast, an interim
product to color Macs. My first Mac was a souped up MacII, which was
basically upgraded to a IIfx by the guy I bought it from, it kicked the
snot outta the IIGS but cost an arm and a leg (still way cheaper than
buying a stock IIfx, though).

I never heard of the IIfx.Â* Guess I'll have to search the net for
this one.

It's the one that Jobs labeled "wicked fast". I didn't want one of the
early Macs, I opted for an Atari at that point (it's still laying around
somewhere). When the Mac II came along, with slots, I bought.

I researched and found out that these were selling at base price of
$9000.Â* Would've put me in debt for too long.
But then, I was a kid then.

Nobody in their right mind would spend $9,000 (or more) on a machine
that is useful for no more than two years.

Well, I wouldn't claim that I was in my right mind :-), but in 198X
[1], I bought a 386DX system with 2MB memory, 40MB disk, printer and
software for some 26,000 Dutch guilders list price [2] and I used it for
quite a number of years. (Only got rid of it a few years ago.)

I have to admit that a 386SX-16 was still pretty useful in 1994 so I can
imagine the DX getting even more miles.

[1] Would have to dig up the papers in our basement to get a more
precise year.

[2] No, I did not *pay* that list price. The manufacturer - my employer
- was kind enough to give a big discount and the Dutch IRS gave a big
tax reduction.

If I remember correctly, a 386DX in the 80s would have cost you about as
much as a car would.

So tell me, how do you get a multi-button mouse working under Linux
where you can EASILY program the buttons to perform tasks like
launching web browser etc. Tell me, can Linux do this ?
