Have a look at these, the first is the most likely
You Cannot Create a Network Connection After You Restore Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;329441 Dial-up Modem or PPPoE Option in New Connection Wizard Is Unavailable http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320558 Don't worry about the #4, it's just a name. -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. "jclinans" wrote in message ... Hi everyone, Windows XP Pro. SBC DSL internet service. Well, it just quit working. I come over tonight to see what I can do and find an interesting scenario. She has one nic card in her system. She had multiple networking connections attached to this card. None of which worked. DSL dial up conenctions. I removed the connections and figured I would create a new proper one like I have done a hundred times before. I go to the create new connection wizard and when I get to the section that would allow me to select ppoe as the type of connection, the ppoe is shaded out and can not select this option. So I opened device manager and uninstalled the nic card. Proceeded to power down the system and physically removed the card and then reboot. Going back to device manager verifies that the card does no longer exist. I reinstalled the card and powered up the system once more. Device manager picked up the pnp device and installed drivers. However I run into the same situation as prior. I an not allowed to create a ppoe connection using this card. So I swapped in a known working nic card and recieved the same results. I then tried using sbc'c driver disk to install ppoe and the program shows me an error or no nic card detected. One thing I notice is this. This nic card is the only nic card in the system. Yet it shows it in network connections as being lan #4. It seems there are 3 other lan settings somewhere and I cant find out where. My theory is that by removing these otehr 3 ghost lan connections that I would then be able to assign ppoe to this card. I think ppoe and services aer running for anther non-existent lan connection. Far-fetched? prolly..but Im grasping here as well. haha....any ideas folks? lengthy..I know..and I apologize but im just trying to get as much information out as I can get. (this problem has happened to me before and I actually formatted the pc to correct it..I never have been able to figure out how to fix this) |
