XP Home based on Win ME but XP Pro based on NT ?

Hi,

I've been told that XP Home is based on Windows ME (and as such is not
very good), whereas XP Pro is based on Windows NT and is much better
in terms of stability etc.

However, I was under the impression that XP Home was just a cut down
version of XP Pro with less features. I also assumed that it was a bit
of an attempt by Microsoft to position each prodcut in the market.

Anybody got any comments on this?

From a user's perspective, both versions of XP are simply the newest
siblings in the Windows NT family of operating systems: Win NT Win 2000
Win XP.

Negative stuff that you here about XP Home Edition is not inherited from Win
ME. What you have probably heard is nothing more than grousing about the
learning curve that confronts home users who jump from the W95/98/ME family
into the WinNT/2000/XP family.

Other replies prior to this one are correct and you will often notice when
you go to download XP driver upgrades for 3rd. party programs, you will see
the option is 2000/XP.
FWIW, I originally ran '98 (1st. release), upgraded it to ME (full version),
then later to XP Pro (also full version) and have never had any problems.

or not, and they don't care if you never bought from them

others, wasting their time and money, try to impress
them with their worthless over engineered programs.

Yes, it is more stable, but sometimes it dogs it,
and can't be restored. You simply have to install
clean when it does, it doesn't even reinstall on top
the old install, because the stupid thing asks for
Administrator password but it can't recognize it.

To find your mail files, you have to dig for them
10 folders deep, in a weird very long directory name.
Scew your mail box he says, you don't need to find it.

If you don't know how to secure and configure XP,
then every body on the internet can access your computer,
play with your files and do as they please.

What also worse, for the littlest problem, the computer
shuts down. Who is the stupid person that thought
shutting the computer down in the middle of your
work is a great idea.

Both are based on the NT kernel. The Win9x kernel ended with WinME, it =
is the last of the line. Both versions have the same stability features. =
Your impression is correct. WinXP Home is simply a "cut down" version =
designed more for the home user. It is missing a few of the features =
found in the Pro version (notably IIS and the ability to connect to a =
domain) - the core OS however is exactly the same.

May I suggest you abandon your normal male penchant for not reading the
manual and actually learn what you are talking about. If you find using XP
unfriendly, you have some serious learning disorders. Every example you gave
was a smoking gun pointing out how ill informed you are. Maybe it is just
the accelerated pace of technology that has you confused. Do you also find
programming your DVD or VCR player a challenge? Maybe that remote with the
ability to control more than one device is the same frustration. I see your
frequent posts, and usually just shake my head in amusement. But I am
beginning to feel sorry for you, either you are a pre-teen with serious lack
of parental supervision, or an ill informed adult. In either case your posts
are getting painful to ignore. Where in the computer owners manual does it
say this computer was expressly built for stupid ill informed people that
refuse to learn how to use them?
