no response when i click on "sighn in..."

If I click on the "sighn in..." link on the first
messenger screen I get no response. I also tried through
the right click menu. I have a hotmail account and had a
msn plug in, but I removed it as I thought it may have
caused the problem

Do you happen to have MSN Explorer/MSN 8 loaded? If so, close that before you try to sign
into Messenger (it'll be in the notification area, near the clock, and looks like a
butterfly -- just right-click and choose Exit).
