Stopping XP SP2 Security Centre from Issuing Firewall Warnings
I have Norton Internet Security installed on my computer, so I don't need the
Windows Firewall. I have disabled the Windows Firewall, clicked the checkbox in the Windows Firewall configuration screen that says "I have a firewall solution that I will monitor myself", and unchecked the Firewall Alert Setting. The first time I reboot after adjusting the settings, everything is fine. However, the second time I reboot, I get a bubble warning in my taskbar telling me that I need to adjust my Windows Firewall settings, and all of my Firewall configuration settings have reverted back to the original settings. How do I make my configuration changes permanent so that these warnings will stop popping up? Thanks in advance, D.W. |

Have you checked with Symantec to see if they have an update for the
version of NIS that you're using ? Thanks for the response. I have checked the Symantec website for an update.
So far they have not identified any compatibility issues with SP2. I found a post further down in the newsgroup from somebody who is having the same problem as me. They are using Zonealarm, not Norton Internet Security. Regards, D.W. "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote: Have you checked with Symantec to see if they have an update for the version of NIS that you're using ? Stopping XP SP2 Security Centre from Issuing Firewall Warnings
Sorry, I may have misspoke about there not being any compatibility issues.
This is from the Symantec website: "Your Norton security products contain tamper protection features that prevent malicious code from determining their status. This tamper protection also prevents the Windows Security Center from determining the status of your Norton security products. Shortly after Microsoft releases Service Pack 2, Symantec will make a correction available through LiveUpdate. This correction will allow the Windows Security Center to correctly identify the status of your Norton security products." From this, I should only be getting alerts from the Security Centre if I let it monitor my firewall. However, I have selected the options telling the Security Centre that I will monitor my Firewall manually, and not to issue Firewall alerts. Yet Windows keeps changing my configuration settings when I reboot, and keeps trying to monitor the firewall. It should be noted that Norton Antivirus (which I am also running) has tamper protection as well, and can't be monitored by the Security Centre. I have turned off the Antivirus alert in the the Security Centre, and it stays off. It is only the settings for the Firewall that are being reset. Regards, D.W. Hi Several others have reported this issue, only way to avoid this resetting is to disable the Security Center service. Someone in another newsgroup thread indicated that a Symantec service was the cause for this behavior on his computer (I can't remember in what newsgroup though). -- torgeir, Microsoft MVP Scripting and WMI, Porsgrunn Norway Administration scripting examples and an ONLINE version of the 1328 page Scripting Guide: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...r/default.mspx |

Stopping XP SP2 Security Centre from Issuing Firewall Warnings
I read further down in this newsgroup that disabling the SP2 Security Centre
may cause problems. I will try it and see what happens. Thanks, B.J. Hi As the Security Center is just a status reporting thing, I can't really see that it can cause any trouble doing this. -- torgeir, Microsoft MVP Scripting and WMI, Porsgrunn Norway Administration scripting examples and an ONLINE version of the 1328 page Scripting Guide: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...r/default.mspx |
