SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION!!

System volume Information(a system hidden folder) is
consuming huge amount(550mb,662mb & so on) of space in all
the HDdrives of my system..this autoconsumption of
diskspace is everincreasing day by day..
1.Why does this so happen??
2.Is this autoconsumption of diskspace useful or is it
unwanted???
3.what to do to stop/prevent this---please advice..
4.does this happen with all OS(win-98,ME,XP) or only with
win-XP???
5.what should be the ideal file systems in a dual boot
with win-ME & XP ???

spec:-2 HDDs; dual boot with win-ME on Cprimary master)

This folder is used to save the System Restore information for that
disk drive.

2.Is this autoconsumption of diskspace useful or is it
unwanted???

It is very useful, vital in fact, if you ever need to use System
Restore to recover from a bad update, botched program install, or
other problem.

3.what to do to stop/prevent this---please advice.

Read up on System Restore so you are aware of what you are doing, and
the possible consequences of making any changes. Then you can
configure System Restore settings for each disk drive or you can
disable System Restore completely by using Control Panel - System -
System Restore.

System Restore was first released with Windows Me. It was not part of
Windows 98 (or 95).


5.what should be the ideal file systems in a dual boot
with win-ME & XP ???


All partitions that you want to access from Windows Me, including the
one that Windows Me is installed on, *must* use the FAT32 file system.
Windows Me cannot access NTFS partitions. Any partition that is
exclusive to Windows XP (e.g. the one that Windows XP is installed on)
can be either FAT32 or NTFS as you prefer.

My suggestion is that you leave System Restore in operation on the
Windows XP and Windows Me partitions, although you may want to reduce
the amount of disk space allocated to it especially if the drives are
quite large. Usually 800 mb to 1 gb of disk space for System Restore
provides enough for most instanaces where System Restore needs to be
used, but this can vary depending on how the computer is used. If,
for example, you are regularly and routinely installing and
uninstalling large numbers of applicaiton programs then you may need
more system restore space.

Many users find that they can dispense with System Restore completely
on disk partitions that contain only data files.
