Default MSN Messenger 6 - is it a joke?

Hi guy's,

My Girlfriend installed this on her laptop and her home PC, now as a result
she cannot logon to MSN Messenger or access any MS site even some normal
sites will not come up.

for instance www.hotmail.com will not work.
www.msn.co.uk will but www.msn.com wont http://messenger.msn.co.uk doesn't
work.

What is going on here? i managed to get an older version 3 on there but
still did not connect thinks it isnt connected to the web..i gave it a proxy
server on port 80 and 1080 didnt work....no firewall and certainly no
proxy....something has been written that is stopping this...checked the
LMHost file still no joy..what is going on iv never seen this it worked for
two days then just disconnected and that was that...my partner uses
AOL....im not interested in gettin 6 back i want the original Windows
Messenger for XP back or MSN version 4 for the ME machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..i see a few others are having this
issue anybody had any joys?

i tried some of Jonathan Kays recommendations but still no joy.

I thought once you had Messenger/Hotmail accounts that was your passport instantly created for you?

In messenger 6---do you have a passport ? everything is tied into
passport to use
IM 6, if you do not have an account for passport sign up for one, or you
loose your buddy list, and cannot access IM. I just went through that
process myself. www.passport.com

Is she using RoadRunner, AOL or NTL? If so, don't do anything for a while.
They're having problems with some domains
