Since using windows 7 I have been forced to download and use Windows Live
Mail as an alternative to Outlook Express, after a lot of tinkering around
I've managed to get it somewhere near as usable as my original Mail/News
client.. however when using 'News' the headers are now no longer in bold
type to let me know that there are 'new unread' messages still in the
unexpanded thread, also annoyingly the name of the author of the original
topic or replies no longer appear in the 'from' column, and try as I might I
can't find a way of activating this feature.. if these two problems are
solvable I would be more than appreciative TIA Ivan.

Not at all true. You are certainly not "forced." There are many
alternative e-mail programs and many alternative newsreaders. Some of
there you have to pay for and some are free.

I, for example, do *not* use Windows Live Mail. I use Microsoft
Outlook for e-mail and Forte Agent for newsgroups.

You weren't forced to use WLM, but it is a viable substitute for OE.

Mine does show unread as bold, even if the original post has been read. I'll
let you know how mine is set up, and you can see if it works you (this is
for Newsgroups).
Under View, check View by Conversation.
Show or Hide Show all messages.
Sort by Sent, Descending.

That's it. It looks very much like OE running on my XP desktop set this way.

Others have suggested Thunderbird, and you might like it, too. I didn't care
for it myself. Try a number of different ones and choose the one you like
best, be it a mail and news reader combo like T'Bird or Live Mail, or a
separate client and newsreader. The internet is full of freebies of each.

Have you been into the properties of the news server account and ticked
to include this account when checking for new messages?

To start with I found the lack of XP-type bold (unread) posts very annoying.
The poster's name is still bold, but the post itself looks very skinny, a
sort of 'half-bold' :-)
But, as with most things, I got used to it.
I no longer look at the message, but at the name under From, to fsee if
there is a new post.

Of course you can also go to ViewShow/HideHide read messages, then you'll
only see the new ones.
You might be using this without knowing it, which would account for the
missing names of original authors

WLM isn't too bad, I tried Thunderbird, but we never became friends.

I'm using thunderbird in an occasionally used Ubuntu OS and although it's
OK, I still don't like using it is much as my original OE set up.
I originally purchased and installed a clean copy of W7 on to a new hard
drive about 6 weeks ago, and after discovering that it didn't include the
mail client I downloaded Windows Mail from Microsoft and IIRC the setup
didn't seem to be a million miles away from my original OE, however after a
monitor failure I had problems setting up my Nvidia 8400 graphics card which
appeared to suddenly conflict with my on board graphics card ( I did remove
both sets of drivers and there is also no way of disabling the on-board card
in the bios) it reached a point where no matter what I did W7 refused to
boot (even under 'any' option in safe mode) unless the Nvidia card was
completely removed, then when I tried to boot and reinstall (with the option
of keeping my existing files) from the CD, it informed me that the only way
this could be done was by booting up and 'then' running the CD from 'within'
W7 (sure!) otherwise it would have to be a clean install, removing all
existing files in the process, I eventually gave up on the idea and
reinstalled W7 over the top of my old Vista system, moving my essential
files across from the original drive, used as a slave.
I'm sure it's not my imagination, but the more recent Windows Live Mail
looks to me to be different to the version I had previously downloaded a few
weeks ago, regards the bold writing I now believe that this is to do with
the fact that I have recently installed a full HD 16:9 1080p monitor, which
set at max resolution makes the (unadjustable) header font so fine that the
difference between normal and bold text is almost imperceptible (to my eyes
at least!).. The setup details you gave are identical to mine, however I
still have no sender information in the 'from' section of the viewer, do you
also have this problem?

SNIP

Just as a note, if you are dual-booting between Windows and a Linux distro,
you can use Thunderbird in both, and just point each version to the same
profile folder, and TB will share the same data in each OS. Same with FF
profiles also for bookmarks and add-ins and such.

Hi, Ivan.

As the others said, you were not "forced" to use WLM.

To make the Unread messages more recognizable in the Message List, create a
News Rule:
Tools | Message Rules | News | New:
For all messages
Highlight it with Default

That's what I use, but others here prefer to highlight it with Black - or
Green or whatever looks best to you.

I suspect that very few of us use WLM as it arrives "out of the box". But,
just like OE (and Windows Mail in Vista) before it, WLM is highly
customizable. The WLM Team (the same one that gave us the pale pastel color
scheme) also hid the Menu Bar by default. To see it momentarily, just press
Alt; to toggle it on/off, press Alt+M, M.

The only thing I see in the 'From' section is the sender's alias. For
example, on your posts, I see "Ivan." Are you expecting to see more, or does
that not show up at all?
I have to agree with Grenou about the subject line being like a "half-bold."
I hadn't really noticed it like that, but the unread subject is like Arial
Black and the sender is full bold, while the read subjects are more of a
"faded" font, kind of washed out. The unread is still different enough to
stand out well from the read ones, though.

Thanks for these hints, RC White.
It's my first day with WLM and they helped me a lot.

However, that still makes no difference between Read and Unread messages. We
can make them all red or green or yellow, but still there is little
difference between Read and Unread messages.

This seems to be a WLM bug which, funnily enough, was not there in the Beta
versions.

More information he
http://www.winvistatips.com/windows-...r-t367288.html
or he
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/...-unread-m.aspx

Let's hope MS fixes this bug soon.
In the meantime, Anybody found a workaround?

The only problem I see with this is that even after the post is read, it
remains whatever color you picked. If it would change to (my) default of
black after I read it, that would be nice. I set the color to blue in the
rule, and new posts show up as blue, but even after reading them, they're
still blue. If yours works any differently, I'd like to know how you did it.
BTW, I have no trouble differentiating between read and unread with my
default color. I don't think it's a "bug" per se, just a feature that a lot
of people don't seem to like too much :-)
