Github is a repo facility. You're not confusing it with Git are you? Git is open source. GitHub is a hosted repo company. There is also a free open source Git repo called, GitLab. GitHub is the popular, social place to share opensource software. It is a private company. I see so much linux stuff on Github I thought it was primarily that! |

The FOSS world is immune to the Evil Empire's monopolizing machinations. What the **** do you know? By your own admission you are just a desktop dabbler. RedHat, their lackey Poettering, and systemd are the "Evil" within FOSS. As their hegemony takes hold it will become harder and harder for independent and alternative projects to be sustained. GNOME has just received $1,000,000 from an unknown benefactor, which is most likely RedHat. With that kind of money directed toward a SINGLE PROJECT the mainstream distros won't pay much attention to anything else. RedHat and systemd are POISONS that should be purged from FOSS. But what the **** would you know? All that you can do is click ersatz "buttons." |

Besides, the software ON Github doesn't belong to them even if they buy the site. |

You don't understand. All that Microsoft wants, is the contact info, the "phone book". They don't give a rats ass what the site does. For an example of this, look at the purchase of LinkedIn. What did they do with that asset exactly ? They paid billions for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LinkedIn "As of 2015, most of the company's revenue came from selling access to information about its members to recruiters and sales professionals." They'll do the same thing with the Github registration info. "John Smith knows Python, and here is the proof." And of course, they'll send spam emails offering "Get Office 365". Because you know the people on Github are really hungry for stuff like that. It's like Microsoft is buying a bowling alley, because it "likes the smell of the shoes" :-) Paul |

Them's wrongthink! If a company would like to keep their code secure but still use git, they need only employ gitlab internally. There is no need for them to us github. What they wish to share with the world could also be used via their own gitlab. Microsoft would only gain another social media company, like LinkedIn. -- Peter Kozlov |
