Default windows installer installation

Having trouble with the installer program and was wondering if there is
a way to determine if I have the installer installed. I looked at the
'control panel/add/remove programs' and it does't show any installer.
But then again, that may be normal.
TIA

Start he You receive an error message when you try to install a
program that uses the Windows Installer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886630

If you installed the latest Version of Windows Installer for XP then it
would listed in Add/Remove Programs.
Since you state that it is not listed then try the steps listed in the
above MS KB.

If no joy, suggest you install the latest Version of Windows Installer
for XP after first configuring the system to Clean boot -

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=en

Scroll down to the 'Files in this Download' section and click the
Download button next to WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe.
*Save* the download. When the download completes, read this:

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Configure the system to Clean boot and then install
WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe, restart, and Windows Installer should now
function properly.

Remember to UNdo the Clean boot configuration steps !

After hours of more digging I determined that it was the installer
program that was the problem but 'Silverlight.exe not being installed,
even thou the 'add/remove programs' said it was installed. Everything is
working normal (?) now. Thanks for the response.

Eh ? There was not an issue with Windows Installer, it was with Silverlight?

May I ask, what do you use Silverlight for ? It appears to be a useless
appendage from Microsoft that requires constant updating with no
apparent benefit to the User. When MS ADHD strikes again, it will
probably disappear after a large sum of money is wasted by MS on it and
huge amounts of time are wasted by Users trying to get updates installed
for it.

I don't use directly, my anti-virus program uses it to update. Needless
to say, when the anti-virus isn't working, I become a little concerned.

Which antivirus uses Silverlight to update ? If you're referring to
Microsoft Security Essentials, then *no*, it does not use nor require
Silverlight to be installed in order for it to be able to update.

I don't believe I mentioned any anti-virus, so I can't understand why
you would be so defensive regarding some MS program. I am very happy
with my anti-virus program and have had zero problem in the last three
years, so if I am happy, what difference would it make to you. Have a
nice day and thanks again for your original suggestion.

Whichever AV you use is up to *you*. All I was pointing out was that MSE
does not require Silverlight be installed in order for it to update.
Take care.
