I have your instructions for backups, restore and cloning
on Macrium but how do I create a key? Also does it require
a brand new flash key for this like it requires a brand new
DVD-R for the Rescue CD? If so, we'll have to wait a month
before I get paid for me to purchase one.

Robert

I made a key sometime recently.
This picture is from 9 months ago or so.

The contents of the USB key afterwards, look like this.

https://i.postimg.cc/g0CR2th7/macrium-thumb.gif

It looks like I used my one and only 1GB stick for that.
And my 1GB stick even has a label on it. Who knew ?

I bought that stick in the junk pile at the best buy
(all sorts of obscure, end of line, USB keys). I wanted
one that size, because a particular HP USB tool, doesn't
work with larger sticks. Now, of course, no local store
would stock a 1GB stick. I was lucky I got that stick.

Paul

on a XP machine. Otherwise, use the latest).

I still don't understand how Kapersky will
help with the CD boot problem?

Latest Kaspersky ISO is he

Rufus will detect it's a hybrid and suggest using dd. (Just
double click Rufus, choose the Kaspersky ISO, check the pendrive is
the correct letter and write)

Thoughts/suggestions?

Paul suggested a registry edit. Might solve your boot problem.

I appreciate the download pages and
have bookmarked them but still would
need instructions.

Paul has helped me previously many
times and help create my system and
knows it very well.

I think I'll go with Paul on his Macrium
suggestion.

Thanks,
Robert

It's like making the CD you just made, except
when the "select the media type" part of
the procedure comes up, you specify the USB stick.

Please note that tools which prepare USB media,
they like to *delete* the existing USB stick
content. You should copy the existing USB
stick content (your Bookmarks file) some place safe.

Remember, that for the most part, USB flash is for
"sneakernet", for transport, not for archival storage.
You never put your only copy of stuff on a USB stick.

Now, if you plug in a USB key before starting that
sequence, the USB key shows up as an option.

For the USB to work, it might need to be above
the other items in the boot order.

Floppy \
CD \____ Removable media go first
USB /

Disk1 \____ Fixed media go second
Disk2 /

If "RAID ON" is not working, switch
to the autodetect item with AHCI in
the text.

There was no way of exiting and had
to power it off. I removed the Patriot
and the DVD-R and then Win10 came up
with not genuine.

Its strange the 780 can create the files and
download them to the DVD-R and Patriot but it
won't activate them?

thoughts/suggestions?

I'm getting to that "stumped" state.

One part I don't understand is how the "Not Genuine"
is happening.

The Windows 10 should have very little accumulated
damage. The only way the thing could go not Genuine
at this point is:

1) File system damage (unlikely, repairs are automatic).
2) NIC MAC address has changed.

I just don't understand what is getting into that BIOS.

While on an ordinary computer, I might be telling
you to

1) Change the CMOS battery.
(There is no visible evidence it's flat.
You haven't mentioned an inability to keep correct
time after a power cycle.)
2) In the BIOS exit menu, look for a "Restore Defaults and Exit"
option, to put the BIOS settings back into a "known state".
Which would be RAID ON , SATA 1 and SATA 2 enabled.

But at this point, I can't see how (2) will help.
It would be a Hail Mary.

*******

Is there a USB setup page in the BIOS ?

Around the year 2005 or 2006, a "USB page" was introduced
into BIOS screens, to review and set USB options for USB2.

Does the USB setup page recognize the Patriot plugged in ?
The Patriot must be plugged in, before BIOS POST starts.
When you're looking at a BIOS page, the BIOS does not
automatically scan for hardware changes. All wiring or
plugins must be complete before POST starts.

Just out of curiosity, the last post here mentions an AMT Client setting...
That's the Management Engine - you can connect to the PC even when
it is crashed, and do stuff to it remotely using Management Engine.
Normally, there is no disable for it in the BIOS.

https://www.dell.com/community/Deskt...3577697/page/2

"Had to go into system setup and
intel me amt client and disable it."

That should have been done when Joy refurbished it.

Maybe the NIC ends up with *no* MAC address or something,
because of some aspect of that being fumbled. I'm really
surprised that would make any difference.

You might also make note of what BIOS version the
box is running. The release notes for the BIOS that
I can see on the Dell site, only cover A12 thru A15.
and the changes to the BIOS are not related to basic
functionality.

A good company provides a *cumulative* BIOS release
note, with the changes in all versions listed.
So you could, say, determine A08 made a change to
some important thing. It would be pretty hard to
trace these backwards using archive.org .

Just a quick reply;

You'll never believe what happened after my
last message. I lost my internet connection
again. I've been having this chronic problem
lately of loosing my internet connection.

I called Frontier the first time it happened and
and they suggested unplugging the modem from
the wall. Well it kept happening, and I did unplug
the modem from the wall and it worked but that
really didn't solve the problem.

I called when it happened again and they sent out
a new modem. So when I lost my internet connection
today I decided to trade modem's The old one is a
Actiontech GT784WNV and the new one a Netgear
D2200D..

They said it didn't need to be set up but as usual it did.

I called support a third time and we could not get it
connected to the internet and we couldn't get the old one
to connect either. For some reason I couldn't get the
8500 Ethernet cable to the modem but still the 780
should have connected and so she created a ticket
for it and a tech will come out on Wed.

I finally swamped my cables for the new ones that came
with the modem and got the Ethernet to work then called
for a fourth time where we again reset the settings and I
got online!

In passing, at start-up I noticed the Macriim Reflect System
Recovery below Win7 and thought that might be the Rescue CD
so I choose it but it doesn't look like the Rescue CD so
closed it.

My Dell (laptop) has a button you press at startup, right
after the first screen. I think it's F8 but it might be F11 or even
F12 that shows all the BOOTABLE media detected, and allows you to
choose one with arrow-up or down.
BIOS boot-order settings are ignored.
No idea if this is common to all Dells.
If the USB/DVD is not showing, the OP did something wrong with
the ISO.

I really don't know what I'm looking for,,
I hit F2 and it seems the same as F12 but
maybe you can see something in the settings
that needs to be changed?

I tried to enable Sata02 but when I did I
had to click F1 again. So I set to default
which at first showed all drives check but
I see its changed.

Also I couldn't find a show desktop icon and
looked it up and it seems I have to click some
invisible button on the edge of the taskbar?
Is that right?
