Frustrated Like Totally - With Flash Drives !
On Win XP pro SP3 and is up to date. Two flash dries plugged in and shows; a 32G and a 64G. Plug in third flash drive and bink-bonk sound but does not show ! Tried a 8G and a 256G. Neither show ! These work OK on a Win 7 PC. My 32G flash that shows is READ ONLY. NO SWITCH ! The whole damn drive. I cannot change it to be able to save files to it. What to do ? Thank you ! |

My NEC USB3 card works fine under WinXP SP3. I have several good USB3 sticks, and a few more USB3-in-name-only sticks, and all are detected and function. I had a couple Lexar ones that died, but that was a couple of years ago now. They had TLC flash chips (Which I'm sure all the remaining ones are also TLC). One minute they were writing at about 10MB/sec, the next minute 1.5MB/sec and eventually (a couple hours), they were toast. I wish there were better utilities for USB flash sticks, but that's really expecting too much from the manufacturers, to have an actual diagnostic that can tell you "toast imminent". The hard drive companies make test programs that deliver various "codes" for hardware trouble, and using those code values, you can request warranty service. Which is better than nothing. The flash companies could put a program right on the stick, and then you'd always have a match for your product, in terms of detection and statistics. Paul |

I did a lot of searching and this is what I found.
Win XP PC is UB2 All flash (pen) drives here. A 128G USB3 works just fine there. An identical USB3 128G drive will not register. In order to allow the first 128 USB3 drive to work I had to unplug one of the other drives I had plugged in. Seems that I hit the wall on the number of USB drives. I had two plugged in and was adding a third. The 32G flash drive was read only and I could not get it to change that in the Win XP Pro pc. I plugged it into a Win 7 Pro PC and ran a Properties/Tools/Error-Checking Check Now and the read only was automatically removed. Works now in the Win XP Pro PC just fine. What a pain ! |

As long as at least one stick works at a time, then you can get stuff done. While it could be a power issue, what are the odds of that happening (that it's actually a power overload) ? I've never had any trouble in that regard with my USB stuff. Paul |

I also wondered about the variations. Like my Sandisks with white slides that work everywehre while my Sandisk with a red slide doesn't work in the Win7 laptop. Weird. It sounds like you're saying the quality control and standards are just not there for sticks. |

It sounds like you're saying the quality control and standards are just not there for sticks. You could start with the BIOS page that controls USB and see if everything is turned on. Next, you'd look in Device Manager, and see if all the hardware is accounted for. And the USB3 has been given a driver. Both WinXP and Win7 need USB3 drivers (XHCI). I can't give any excuses for why it works or does not work. While the enumeration seems to get clogged up in the OS, there's no "theme" to it. It doesn't happen to everyone. Would "Safely Remove" make a difference ? Is there some transient that puts half filled records in the registry ? I would think USB would need damn good software filtering to eliminate the possibility of such. USB works best if the devices have unique serial numbers. That can reduce the amount of entries in the registry (a previously inserted stick would leave behind a serial, and wouldn't need to be recorded when it comes in on another port). Paul |

What a pain ! There is no pain USB3 flash drives are backwards compatible no matter what you use. I was packing my sticks in my pocket. Dirt or conductive stuff might have gotten to them. I had better results when I kept the stick in a child-proof pill bottle. Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko |

Both in the USB3 ports and the USB2 ports. There's a very old program for testing USB flash drives: https://www.softpedia.com/get/System.../H2testw.shtml It writes a pattern to the whole drive and then reads it back. I only use it on a brand new drive to see if it's defective. Probably not worth the wear and tear using it again. Useful if you want to change defective drives on warranty. Flash drives do tend to stop working eventually though I have a "winner" that's been going for over 12 years almost daily use. Nirsoft: https://nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html Has a nice little program to examine your past and present USB devices. Some items like power consumption are only available after you plug a drive in. []'s -- Don't be evil - Google 2004 We have a new policy - Google 2012 |
