Not if you're running 8.1. I recently acquired a machine that was running
8, and it was like going back to the paleolithic era.

The first thing I thought of when I saw Win 8 running was "I really
DON'T want an iPhone". This junk (all the tiles) doesn't belong on a
real computer. Some things required clicking with the mouse pointer OFF
THE SCREEN, making the thing unusable in some cases.

Win 7, however, might be considered an upgrade.

When 7 came out, I remember it being described as an improved version of
Vista. Once I considered Win 2000 to be the best version, before it
became incompatible with so much. Now 7 is the best version.

I wish they had forked
off of that version. Just about everything about 8 should have been
chucked in the bin, excepting the greatly improved Task Manager.

Yes, although they'd still have to add crap.

Settings Update & Security Windows Update tells me I am up-to-date but also, in
contradiction, says 1903 is ready for me to install when I'm ready. I recall reading
about several serious issues with it so I'm not over-enthusiastic. What's the
consensus please?

Thanks all.

I decided last night to bite the bullet. 1903 build 18362.267 now installed. Some
minor things awaiting resolution but generally looks OK so far.

it looked more like windows phone than it did an iphone.

microsoft wanted to have a similar user interface across all devices as
well as universal apps.

in theory, that's a reasonable goal, except that combining a
traditional mouse/keyboard ui with a touch-based ui is difficult at
best, and they didn't do a very good job of it.

I'm glad for you Terry. These upgrades can be scary, and they are too
frequent.

What is scary is that there are people like you who go around from one
newsgroup to another misinforming Windows users about updates and
privacy issues.

In Windows 10, you get updates every month; You also get upgrades every
6 months; The time period is almost predictable and I would have
thought that people with some intelligence would be prepared for them.

The next upgrade is not far either. We might get it before UK leaves
the EU on 31st October 2019. Now what is so difficult to plan for it?
If you want to know when is the next monthly patch then it is 13th
August 2019. Can you make a note of this date in your electronic diary
so that you don't have to keep misinforming Windows users.
